Starlight actually turns into an alicorn in the finale but in order to restore magic back to pony land, Starlight has to sacrifice herself, turning into a crystal statue. Its the truth. My uncle works in Hasbro.

Rockhoof and a Hard place seemed like its just about fitting in. I guess a kid that moves into a new school can relate to that. It reminded me of the days when 3d and cgi animation was slowly taking over and all hand drawn 2d animation that used to be traced and hand painted on acetate were being phased out. The best people in the animation industry that used to be top of their game were all suddenly dinosaurs.
 
The way I saw it was he had a hard time fitting in because he was big, loud and clumsy. Not because he’s old fashioned or anything. He would’ve fit in the archaeology job to begin with if he was just told to be careful. Or the very least instructed on what their objective was and that’s to recover archaeological finds intact. Not smashed.

Just saw Friendship Road. I was surprised its in my preferred writing style. “You put two characters in an elevator and then go.”
 
This is the first Trixie episode ever. You get to see the things that she’s emotionally invested in. You get to see how she operates when she’s traveling. You also get to see how hard her life is. Unlike other ponies who live sheltered lives in Ponyville, she’s always been on the road all by herself. Going from town to town making ponies happy with her “magic” but never staying long enough in one place to make friends. Why does she do that? Who knows?
 
Hoofar is probably her first canon fan. Seeing someone love her show and seeing Trixie happy that Starlight was willing to go with her on a really hard trip made me happy and angry at the same time. Because of the reason below. Take it with a grain of salt. Its just an opinion.
 
Trixie is the rightful sixth ranger, not Starlight. She deserves to be Twilight’s friendship student, not Starlight. She’s been all alone all this time trying to reach out to other ponies with her magic shows because she didn’t know how to make friends. Trixie was supposed to be who Twilight was if Twilight never learned about friendship. I could easily imagine replacing Starlight with Twilight in this episode if Starlight never existed and Twilight was Trixie’s friend and mentor.
 
Unfortunately, this is the timeline I live in. Here’s to G5.

Its the same one. It was easy for Scoots to decide because she wasn’t presented with a hard choice. Lightning Dust didn’t care for her safety. If she was presented with two good choices (or in some narrative tropes, choosing between two evils,) it would have turned out the same way but more personal for character making the choice.

I wish there was a twist in Washouts. After Scoots joins them, Lightning Dust reveals all their stunts are rigged. They all look really dangerous but in reality, they were only designed to look like that and are really safe. She tells Scoots that after she got kicked out of the Wonderbolts due to disregard of safety, she didn’t want to put her new team in danger like she used to do because she learned from it.
 
And THEN, just like Twilight said, Scootaloo uses her OWN FREE WILL to decide what she wants to do with her life. But most likely it’ll be status quo.

I want to know what the last episode is in S9. I hope they do an Angry Beavers. That’d be awesome especially if it was VAs reading fan mail impromptu in the recording booth and then the flash animation was made later on based on what happened.

This is true. Remember when Starlight and Sunburst were worried because they had nothing in common? They still liked each other and were scared of drifting apart.
 
This episode didn’t just have Rarity and RD having nothing in common but they were also unironically insulting the things that mattered to the other pony. I’d understand if it were mannerisms that annoyed each other but it was more like being mean and belittling others.

The episode reminded me of G1 MLP where the ponies actually go on adventures, meet strange characters that can either help or harm them and solve problems and obstacles together. They hardly do that anymore in G4.

I wonder if Applejack was in the original draft of this episode. But was it supposed to be RD and Applejack or was it supposed to be Rarity and Applejack? Guess we’ll never know. Lol.

I think the issue is the whole ‘hidden fees’ thing, which is like most of Flim and Flam’s schemes, legal but heavily dishonest.
Schooling seems to be subsided by the government anyway, which might well make the scheme illegal. They appear to be presenting the extra material as ‘optional upgrades’, but that clearly isn’t the case.
 
Conventional education, I’d think, could be funded by taxes. Y’know the same kind of schooling Cheerilee teaches the CMC. But friendship is extra curicular like a masteral or a Phd. Its optional so the student has to fund it themselves.
 
That episode is all sorts of messed up.

Flim and Flam weren’t lying when they said its a lot of hard work and costs money to run a school. That’s just reality. When you think about it, there were questions before about how the mane 6 could run a school amidst their other jobs. And then its assumed they make money from the tuition that they get from the students but Twilight made it look like the students go there for free now.

Did Friendship U have a lesson? The events that took place in that episode felt convoluted. Was it about education?
 
In Japan, education is free. At least up to high school. Its your discretion to go to college if you want but then that’s out of your pocket and most people can already get jobs after high school. In the US, I know a lot of people get buried in debt due to their college studies.
 
The Flim Flams didn’t want to teach for free because its hard work. Of course its hard work and you’re supposed to get paid for hard work. So what exactly was the episode trying to convey?

So I watched the episode and can someone tell me where they show or say Cozy gave Flim and Flam the book? I know it’s implied by having her walk into the room right after Twilight asks the question of how they got the book but that’s not really concrete at the moment
 
Lol. Can anyone tell me why everyone gasped when Twilight said our first pair is Silver Stream and Gallus?

Friendship U is interesting. So Cozy Glow stole the curriculum Twilight designed and probably gave it to the Flim Flams to plagiarize it.
 
Twilight and Starswirl’s roles were reversed since they last met. Starswirl didn’t judge the Flim Flams for their past unlike he did with Stygian while Twilight was seriously convinced the Flim Flams were up to no good for whatever reason without proof. By convenience of plot, they really were. I wish they weren’t and were just being used by Neigh Say.
 
Rarity felt out of place. I wish Spike was there instead and the episode was just Twilight and Spike getting into shenanigans. The episode was really odd.

Sandbar’s personality is a gag. They use it as a running joke where he talks about mundane things but relative to him they’re amazing.
 
Its like that episode of Batman TAS where all of Batman’s villains were playing cards and telling stories about how they almost killed Batman. Joker’s and Penguin’s were all elaborate and complex but then Killer Croc says “I threw a rock at him.”

After second viewing i can see exatcly where the problem lies. The wirter and director didn’t conveyed very well that Discord is hurt or cared about being a part of the school. So the ending doesn’t feel like Starlight need to apologise or that it was really what Discord wa all about. Pissing on Fluttershy in the beginning was also out of place and shoudnt even be in the script even if you desperatley need mane6 to be gone. Its like making Spike getting rid of Rarity and Twilight because writer want a solo SPike and Smolder episode. Either think of something that make sense or start from a scratch.
 
I stick by my original observation. The PoV was from Starlight’s perspective instead of from Discord’s. We’ve seen him insecure and sensitive before but this story didn’t have enough material to make it personal and resonate with viewers. All the screen time was wasted on cameo after cameo of characters that weren’t even relevant to what lesson they were trying to convey and then Starlight drops the obvious in one line.
 
Smartest people are the kindest people who know how to sense others feelings by reading between lines.

i’m glad we FINALLY got an episode exploring the student 6…over half way through the season.
 
Just saw the episode. It seems like there’s a lot of off screen character development since the student 6 was last seen. Gallus and Sandbar in particular. Ocellus is also now the group’s nerd but everyone else seems to have stayed the same.

This is just speculation but I was under the impression Sandbar wasn’t a normal Ponyville pony. When he was introduced, I could’ve sworn he mentioned he was living in the abandoned Castle of the Two Sisters. He was the one that invited the other students to hide there with him.

Finally managed to catch up on Matter of Principles. The editing was terrible. Its like they were trying to cram in so many characters for no reason.
 
The lesson was very simple, anyway. I don’t even know why they needed so many characters to do an episode like this. Dealing with people that are sensitive, insecure and prideful can be tough. I’ve been there and its especially tough if they’re family.
 
Not the best depiction of Discord since I’ve seen him to be very endearing before. This episode just didn’t show a lot of material to make the story personal. Instead, they decided to use cameo after cameo as fillers until all 22 minutes is used up and then Starlight drops the moral of the story in one line. Not one of the best this season.
