Some like to point out Starlight’s banishing spell as more points towards her “op-ness”, but if one really wanna argue that somehow, you’re better off using her feat of easily repelling the bug bear which took the entire mane six to do (somehow). Even if it’s dubious.

One of many things that suggest to me that Discord’s creations are not the real deal, and no one was in any active danger.

People give Applejack shit for being bland and one-dimensional, but she’s Tony Soprano compared to Sandbar.

Honestly I find it hilarious how unbelievably lacking in personality he is. It somehow swerves him right back into ironically fascinating, by virtue of cardboard cutouts being more three dimensional.

@Philweasel
I’d like to believe that.

Mostly since it ruins a silly little headcanon of mine that constellation creatures like the Ursas are immensely powerful entities.

Friendship, Art, and Magic (2018) - Celebrated Derpibooru's six year anniversary with friends.

So I just did a Double Feature.

A Matter of Principals was pretty meh. It’s good Discord being Discord, the continuity was pretty funny, but it felt like it was there for its own sake. Lastly, they made Starlight overpowered. At least Starlight was the one to learn a lesson. In short, can’t recommend. I had fun, but I can’t call it a good episode.

So then I watched The Hearth’s Warming Club, and it was much better.

I think what I liked most about this episode is that all the cultures feel consistent. Ocellus’ story reflects how the changelings are still trying to forge their own identity after overthrowing Chrysalis. Yona’s story reflects how the yaks can be barbaric, but still have things that are sacred to them. Smolder’s story reflects and shows a commitment to the Machiavellian nature of dragons. Sandbar’s story is mundane. I think my favourite story was Silverstream’s, though. Thanking the ocean for protecting them feels like a thing a real culture would do, and it’s a nice touch that something like the defeat of The Storm King is something they celebrate.

And then there’s Gallus. They don’t pull any punches; he just flat-out doesn’t have a family, and that’s really sad. I like that they’re taking their time with developing the Student Six. Silverstream has divorced parents, Gallus doesn’t have a family, Smolder went through “The Molt” and got kicked out by her family. I’m not so sure the school makes sense, but I’m sold on it as glue that holds things together. I like these new characters, and watching their friendships grow takes me right back to Season One, except that I think the friendships carry more weight here.

Overall, this was everything I wanted it to be, and more.

I mentioned after I watched the episode, Sandbar almost feels like a living embodiment of what some of the other cultures THINK ponies are like. He’s milquetoast, he sings songs, his stories are vapid, he’s never known danger. And yet they like him regardless of that.

Duck - "You would all have 10/10 episodes if i was responsible for this season as story editor and I could do it for free"

Oh please no more school. I had flashbacks from Equestria Girls movies for entire episode. What’s the point of this fantasy setting if you are just going to ponify Equestria Girls.

Anyway, the writing for the episode was mostly decent. Starswirl is a big mystery for the writers. They can’t decide whether they want him as a grumpy old man or clueless nice grandpa. But the plan from Flim Flam and Neighsaya was well thought out. The problem is the ending. I don’t really see what did Flim and Flam did wrong beside copying the lessons and investing in other business. Private schools aren’t evil just because they charge for it.
