@Millennial Dan
Most I’ve heard either didn’t “get” it or didn’t even remember who he was. I don’t think they got the reaction they expected from any audience.
@Millennial Dan
Toys seem to be a result of fan response, Flash probably wasn’t designed to be a toy. His appearance was probably designed to test the waters for male characters in EqG. We all know how that turned out.
@Itsthinking
There has at times been noticeably little merchandise for certain longstanding main characters too (especially show accurate ones). He’s only had one significant appearance so far, so the toys may still come later, if he continues to show up in EqG stuff.
@thps48
Pretty much. The problem is that the target audience apparently didn’t have much of a reaction. There’s not even a doll or any merch of him outside a blindbag.
@Ridley Wolf
Plus, EQA should delve into that sort of thing as well. And then The One and Time Cop parodies shall jut out of the woodwork. (Cannot think of better examples. Apologies. :P )
characters as described by the course of their development
This is your problem right here. Flash hasn’t really been developed so much as merely introduced. He has a personality, but he hasn’t had time for a tremendous degree of growth and dynamic changes. It was exactly the same for every other character after their introductions.
@PonyPon
In the beginning, Twilight started out as the typical overachieving loner.
As the show progressed, she made good friends, learned a lot about herself, completed her schooling, and discovered what she was meant to do.
That in and of itself is a level of character development almost unheard of in a cartoon.
Bringing in a possible romantic interest adds a whole new layer to the character, and shows that she has interests outside of her friends and responsibilities.
I’m not saying that she should develop a relationship with Flash on the show, but I’m not opposed to the possibility.
@Itsthinking
I’ve never really agreed with that assessment. What do you mean by “flat”, or “round” anyway? It doesn’t make much sense. He didn’t exist only to move the plot along. Heck, many people have argued the plot could’ve gotten by without him. In essence, it would seem he’s actually there to add a little something extra to the story, as it were.
@Millennial Dan
I do it in good fun. The jokes where Applejack is actively trying to not be seen as a background pony, likethese, are fucking hilarious.
I think when it all boils down to it, we’re conditioned to expect characters in shows to be overly special, and when there’s one who isn’t, everyone’s like “ooooh boring” like with AJ and Flash.
Funnily enough, when an OC is made out to be special, the cries of “DO NOT STEAL” are heard drifting on the wind.
@Itsthinking
Case in point. Honestly, though, I think we overestimate Flash’s influence on the show as a whole. He has like, 5 minutes of total screen time in Equestria Girls. When I did those Flash Sentry edits, I actually had trouble scrounging up enough footage to actually do the pictures and had to vector a lot of them from absolute scratch. Hell, the body I used for him in the centaur pic is actually recolored from Thunderlane; there’s no full body shots of him that were useable. What I’m getting at, is the guy is a background character at best; of course he’s flat and has no real personality at all. He doesn’t need it.
