It’s possible, but clearly not always the case.
A perfect example is the “mouthpiece” tag.
Many of those are well-drawn, with artwork clearly worthy of upvotes.
However, with the controversial text on most of them, the artwork quality is ignored, and they are downvoted based on subject matter alone.
There are other examples, but I hesitate to bring them up on a “safe” image.
@Axi I seem to notice that with a lot of dm29 and Cartuneslover’s pictures is there is this ‘oddness’ to their work where it’s kinda uncanny valley in a way. It’s really “show-accurate-but-not-quite-actually”
There’s also the people who just dislike the meme, regardless of how it’s used.
dm29 Flashlight picks seems to average around 25 downvotes, doing loving things tend to get a handful (around 3 or 4) so it’s possibly some of the downvotes are people upset from the “misuse”.
I can’t help but wonder how many of the downvotes came from people who dislike the “misuse” of the meme, how many came from people who dislike ships that aren’t their “OTP,” and how many of them came from generic Flash Sentry hate.

Also I think it’s not just him but that he represents the lowest point in the series, ie, it’s that he’s also a visual representation ‘of-that-thing-which-we-don’t-name’
so with that in mind, Flashlight becomes ‘more than just a ship’

Yeah, besides, if people can like every other pairing, out of all the insane ones, (Discord X anybody) out of all the randomly-chosen ones from the Wheel of shipping, all the fan-service-y ones involving Twilight making out with all of her best friends, all the weird mismatched age ones, (PipsqueakXLuna, Mr. Chris Hanson wants a word with you) of all the “you might be a redneck” incest ones, and such. If people can like all of those, then why can’t others like DM enjoy “FlashLight?”
Out of all the insane pairings out there, that’s ironically the only one that’s a major taboo in this fandom, and it’s even semi-canon.
(If alternate-universe human Twilight still shows interest in him in “Rainbow Rocks.”)
