I don’t mean the mass effect mind control style of indoctrination but the religious fanatic corrupting the young and vulnerable before they have the maturity to know better kind of indoctrination. all her actions would still have been her own but her power and insanity would have been better explained.

I’ve always said that, while I’m fine with her given backstory essentially being the first push into her insanity, there DID need to be more, perhaps showing that throughout her life she kept going through things that only confirmed her view about cutie marks.
 
On the other hand, I don’t like the idea of something manipulating her from behind the scenes. It just… doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me, plus those kind of storylines tend to lead to the character’s crimes being dismissed because, hey, they were manipulated so it’s not their fault even though they were the ones who took those actions. And I’m not talking about the fans doing this; I’m talking about this actually happening in-universe. (cough Gekiranger cough)

I agree with this whole concept, but the problem that remains is the format of the show itself. Even if the writers believed such a backstory to be canon, they have a “target demographic” to think about. They may be more willing to go out of their way to make references and jokes for the older audience in recent seasons, but as far as the plot of whatever main event is happening on screen, they have to keep all imagery and explanation within a level that younger kids can understand and appreciate. It would probably be pretty difficult to work in such a complicated indoctrination subplot under those guidelines.
 
Now the comics, on the other hand, might just be willing to do something like that.

I’ve always liked the idea that starlight was mentored and subtly mind screwed by a malignant entity (perhaps Grogar?) who tried to turn her into a sleeper agent becuase he/she recognized her power and wanted her to destabilize equestria so it could come in and finish the job.
 
This creature would have ensured that she grew up believing what it wanted her to believe and that she had the power to pull her plans off by secretly increasing her power or tutoring her itself under differant guises.
 
It wouldn’t be straight up brainwasing but a more subliminal kind of Indoctrination that would give the show a plausible excuse as to why starlight wouldn’t remember this secret mentor who steered the course of almost her whole life.
 
I dunno. Anythings a better excuse for her Assholery and her instability then what we got and if not like her, it would at least make it easier to sympathise with her.

Yeah, the writers spent most of their time futzing around with fanservice when it could’ve been put to better use.
 
As for your suggestions on how to improve Starlight’s backstory, I completely agree. Adding in any one of those details would’ve made Starlight’s backstory more believeable.

Shine like our main ones? Dude, look at the show. Our main characters minus Twilight are treated the side character trash in the two-parters so far. Thorax’s memory of the Mane 6 was practically that last time the two-parters represented the other 5 with any sort of dignity.
 
The only reason I’m looking forward to it is because the main arcs in the show recently have been so”filler”, that this scenario seems to be a conclusion for that filler.

Goddamn I was dreading this kind of thing. Part of me knew it was gonna be something like this but really hoped it wouldn’t be.
Why are the mane 6 so damn useless all the time now? And at the expense of making a trash character like Starlight look good? Think I’ll just save my high expectations for the movie.

Agreed. Most of Starlight’s problems stem from her backstory.
 
I’m probably in the minority on this, but I actually feel that the amount of backstory we were given was sufficient to explain her motivations and why she went down the path she did. That’s not to say I wouldn’t have appreciated more, had the story offered it, but I think that what we did get was a suitable foundation for her character.
 
I will agree, though, that (needed or not) more story might have solved a number of problems people seem to have with her.

Which I mostly blame on the small amount of time given to it. The trip back to Starlight’s home town lasted only about three minutes, yet if that amount was doubled by simply taking one minute of each of the first three alternative timelines seen, it would have been enough to expand on the already existing backstory and show Starlight going through other hardships involving cutie marks (such as being harassed to a worse degree than the CMC for not having one prior to getting hers, being looked down upon by her parents for not exhelling in the talent they wanted her to) throughout her years before getting the idea to create Our Town.
