I got pointed to this quote from a redditor who works in data:
They did not. Google is just abiding by their longstanding policy of using the official place names from the USGS’s Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). Where those names conflict with standard, internationally recognized names, Google displays them differently for users in the US vs elsewhere. It’s a reasonable policy that only looks unreasonable because the US government is being unreasonable.
I am no lover of Google and I do think they’re kissing the ring in a variety of other ways, but this isn’t one of them. Sincerely, a data guy.
I’ll be blunt: If Google Maps had it so that if you launch in Russia Ukraine is part of Russia or launching in China Hong Kong and Taiwan are part of China, we would have the same energy as we have now. Google has full power to ignore the president’s insane claim and stick with reality. They aren’t, and that’s where the problem lies.

I take hope from the fact that all around the country, even in fairly conservative rural areas, there’s anti-ICE, anti-DOGE, and anti-Trump protests underway. A mass demonstration at Tesla dealerships nationwide is planned in a few days. Media isn’t covering them much yet, but crowd size is getting into the hundreds and thousands. Progressive org Indivisible is reporting people who have never engaged with politics before in their lives have started showing up to their meetings and Zoom calls. The largest protests are happening outside of the government offices Elon has occupied.
This might not sound like much, but this much protest is happening at a time when…
…white middle class citizens’ material conditions aren’t much worse than they were before Donald took office (egg prices and availability notwithstanding)
…mainstream media is avoiding covering the protests and is working to rationalize, normalize, and sanewash Donald and Elon’s actions
…most of the country is being racked by bitter cold and snowstorms
…school is in session
…unemployment is still low
Once a couple of the above or more change, we’re going to see unrest escalate at an exponential level.

Don’t get your hopes up. Yes, a lot of people are protesting but protests never lead to any meaningful change because the protestors are always outnumbered by people who disagree with them and are apathetic to their plights.
Things will get worse, people will rightfully complain, but nothing will change. I predict the Republicans will win again and again. They’ve found their loyal base of brainwashed dullards who will sacrifice their first born sons if their leaders told them they’d make them rich if they did so.

Yes fine. The impeachment over extorting Ukraine for election interference was always not going to happen. It is impeachment worthy but it was always over such abstractions that Americans would never have enough support for it.
Then there was the coup impeachment, and if Moscow Mitch hadn’t blocked it for a month then it would 100% have lead to a conviction. If McTurtle had let the iron be struck while it was hot then the 9+ Rep Senators needed would totally have voted “Yeah that bastard tried to have me killed.” Instead he waited almost a whole month and let the reich-wing media sphere run overtime gaslighting and doing damage control, until whoops! Now nobody remembered that thing they all saw happen.
Mitch has one foot in the grave already and he’s trying to do some last minute image rehabilitation. That’s it. Trump already had him excommunicated from the party so now he’s groveling to everyone else…despite being the singularly biggest reason why politics are so fucked up right now and why Trump got in office both times.
Fuck ’em.
