What sunk Delevoye was the press revealing that he also held the position of administrator for an insurance training institute, something he conveniently omitted to declare to the HATVP, the French organism that enforces transparency for politicians. He tried to downplay it at first, but then more revelations came about his ties with the private, and more specifically the insurance sector, until the conflict of interest was so blatant he couldn’t decently keep his position.
 
Doesn’t mean Macron has given up on reforming the pension system yet, but at least that’s one less corrupt lackey to worry about.

Françoise Nyssen, Macron’s favorite propagandist and tool, has huge suspicions on arrangements with the president for ignoring the urbanization standards of Paris for her Actes Sud edition group.  
Flessel & Co, close to the PM and Macron, Laura Flessel is accused of tax evasion but was sure Macron would protect her.  
Most of the time the staff of Macron either resigns, either there’s a start of investigation and the investigation ends with almost no follow-up.  
Macron knows who he’s working with, it’s a fucking mafia. And let’s not count the police search in various journals (Mediapart) or politicians (Le Pen, Mélenchon) all on the request of the government. Imagine, you’re doing politics or reporting events, hold a newspaper, exploding the bullshitometer or not, and one day there’s a bunch of armed cops knocking at your door.

Hope is the most precious thing to hold if we want a better future, so even if Trump has damaged that too, losing it altogether would make it all the harder to fix the rest.

I respect Takei’s opinion. But I can’t help but feel the sentiment of “We healed from having concentration camps 80 years ago” becomes a bit sour knowing that we’re doing the concentration camp thing again.
 
It’s nice that yeah, we can recover. But we can clearly regress too. Especially since it took some 8 or so decades to recover but all it took was some 1 decade to fall.

Had you bothered to follow the whole conversation instead of blindly replying to the last post, you’d know that the accused wasn’t Trump and the capital offense wasn’t his imaginary wall that he loves to brag about so much, but the seemingly endemic and bottomless crass ignorance among conservatives (that only Hanlon’s razor forbids me to call pure malice) from which the idea of it — which actually constitutes one of the lesser harmful ones (if only by virtue of not having been properly enacted), especially in comparison of some others like the aforementioned exhibit — originated.

California’s attempt is admirable, if somewhat misguided.
 
Make no mistake, a lot of the companies take advantage of their “contractors”, and I won’t even talk about the numerous health and safety violations that wrack them. Their wage skimming is also insane, with some drivers barely able to pay back their incurred debts.
 
Regulation is needed. Not the way Cali is going about it, but you’re a fool if you think these companies should be given free reign to do as they please.

Even before “the gig economy”, companies abusing contractor status to get around labor regulations was common enough to be joked about. It’s just that Uber etc. turned it into their entire business model.
