Okay, I guess.

Remember when Granny Smith was a wrinkled, frail and senile old mare?

I think the show is the problem here, the fans just took what was shown and ran with it. We never see Twilight concerned about her parents, only about what Celestia thinks of her. And even though we rarely see Celestia it’s still an infinite amount more screen-time than Twilight’s parents. I don’t think they’ve even been mentioned in the last 3 seasons. In fact I’m fairly certain most younger viewers and casual watchers thing Celestia is Twilght’s mom.

It would explain why Twilight was always so desperate for her approval, why she wrote letters explaining what she learned all the time, why she was sent off/banished to Ponyville to make friends, and explains why she has such powerful magic.Getting a feeling of deja vu, wonder if I wrote this out before?
she doesn’t have to outright replace her. someone can be an important maternal or paternal figure in someone’s life without outright taking the place of their mother or father.
we could also go down a certain other route and note they’ve only made two in-person appearances (not including flashbacks): one when shining armor married the ol’ ball and chain and officially became royalty (even if it’s only a figurehead status) and when twily-butt slapped on the wings and became royalty.
look at those shit-eating grins!
