There are different notifications, the ones for forum threads and image comments are the bell, PMs are the mail icon, and site wide announcements stay up and can’t be removed, so there’s no way you could have missed it, even on mobile, unless you were away from the site for the entire time it was up, I do not know how it could be any simpler than that.

The “bell” is for “personal” notifications: new comments on images you’ve commented on, new posts in threads you’ve posted in, new additions to galleries you’re subscribed to etc.
 
Site-wide announcements are always in the header area.

The banner at the top of the site should have been way more noticeable than your notifications, also the notifications are still useful for forums or to see any activity on images you made or really like.

There was a notification at the top of the site for like two whole months, linking to the forum post explaining in excruciating detail how to participate.
 
Just like the one that’s there right now noting that the community collab is finished.

And actually HOW is one able to participate? I didn’t get any notification about it.

3 years and change ago, I literally just messed around in a pony creator until I had something I kind of liked, saved the image as a reference, then decided to make it a hippogriff instead.  
Poor boy still has no name, and only ever gets drawn once a year, but still.

It’s always the last two months of the year or so. And uploading an entry way beforehand is a-ok as long as you don’t presume to tag it as a db collab entry before the collab is officially announced for that year.

I should really get in on this.
