We all know Twilight didn’t become an evil tyrant in the finale, but who’s to say she still won’t wind up as one far into the future?  
After all, we all know how mentally unstable she can get.

It said that she would’ve turned into Midnight due to her being desperate to get all the nations to be put back in harmony after the Villainous Trio caused disharmony and she’d force everyone to be friends again.
 
I can see why they didn’t go for it though, not so much painting Twilight in a bad light but more of Midnight or an evil Twilight in general would put more spotlight and popularity on her than the Villainous Trio. You could even have Celestia and Luna turn into Daybreaker and Nightmare Moon and the trio would get shoved to the side.

Really? I would’ve loved to of seen a pony version of Midnight Sparkle, but apparently that’s an EqGirls-exclusive character unfortunately. Plus, some fans probably would’ve gotten mad over Twilight temporarily turning evil, or some anti-Princess Twilight folk would use that to argue she’s “not fit to be a princess,” or “Villainous Trio” fans would argue that makes her worse then they are.
 
Some seriously love painting Twilight as the “true villain of the show,” much like they do Celestia, Discord, and such…

The funny thing is in the leaks for Season 9 they were going to have two different ways that Twilight was gonna turn evil in the finale and one of those ended up with her turning into Midnight Sparkle

Midnight Sparkle in fact seems to represent a fragment of Twilight’s potential as a villain, since it only showed her love for knowledge and power; It seemed that Midnight Sparkle would be more explored at everfree camp, but then it seemed that they discarded the concept.

Mean Twilight had the full potential of being the villain at the end of the show.  
She was not characterized only by a personality trait, she was like Twilight, but without Celestia’s tutoring, she liked knowledge and the more she learned, the more focused she was to fulfill her goals.  
While the other mean6 could not concentrate on one thing without acting erratically as their opposites, Mean Twilight tried to pretend to be the true Twilight to be able to learn more about the tree of harmony and its elements.  
Imagine if she was escaped, more was learned from the world she was in and everything Twilight could offer as a villain was exploited.

I feel that the scriptwriters, both of the show and of eqg and the comics know that Twilight could work very well as a villain, but they never had the opportunity to explore this concept since Hasbro would not allow it.
