I would expect America to end up like Belarus or Gilead, but poorer and redneck-ish, where everyone is a MAGAt and a troll who thinks only for the sake of bragging.
And the idea of America becoming into something like Russia but Evangelical sounds scary. Along with the possibility of Russia keeping its colonies in Ukraine just cos some Magats and rednecks wanted cheap eggs and gas - or worse, taking over Ukraine and continuing into Europe.
What is your advice for me, as a non-American watching the news? Things like that made me consider taking breaks from twitter so I won’t waste my time screaming at screens.

This change of forcing trans people’s IDd to identify as the gender they were assigned at birth instead of the gender they currently are is incredibly harmful, and will no doubt make things harder then they already are.

According to Wikipedia, the CDC estimates that 1,197,470 Americans died from Covid. Clearly, that was not enough for it to taken seriously. I wonder how many have to die before America gets its collective head out of its ass and realizes that things like science and medicine are important. 5 million? 10 million? 50 million?
Maybe when a Republican parent who refused vaccinations for their family holds their dying child in their arms, they will wake up. Or maybe they will remain indoctrinated until they too expire.
As far as I’m concerned, they have made their bed.

My dad got my entire family infected. My mom, brothers, sister, all of them. I was the only one to not get sick because I was the only one to get vaccinated (spoiler warning: he still hasn’t put two and two together).
After a few days from getting a positive test result back he was bedridden. He would randomly lose consciousness from lack of oxygen to his brain. We finally took him (and my mom) to the hospital after he fell off the toilet and hit his head. I had to carry my own father to the ambulance. A proud man who still is hard working to this day, and he was reduced to so little by Covid. And then he spent a week in the hospital stuck to his bed so much he had to pee in a bottle.
I remember the day he got those initial test results: we spent over an hour in the same car driving back and forth for his job. He was calling his friends and talking to them about how bullshit it was about all these mask requirements. He even told a story about how his supervisor asked him in a survey whether he was vaccinated - told he didn’t have to answer if he didn’t want to - but bragged to her that nah it’s fine, he’s not and he won’t be. Well he sure became a believer in Covid fast once he got it and had his trip to the hospital.
The point of all this? All it took was a couple days of Fox News after he got better and he was back to calling Covid “a hoax”.
It literally is this with the brain rot MAGA has done to the conservative voter base.

One of my family worked in a hospital at the height of the pandemic and many of her fellow nurses, who were educated in healthcare and saw people dying from Covid, refused to be vaccinated. It should have been grounds for termination but the hospital was desperate.

You can’t fix stupid. At least not by means you would consider acceptable.
That frustration and disbelief you felt… I did not feel it as acutely as you must have, but I do know it. For whatever it’s worth, I am sorry that your family fell prey to hideous lies.
This is the kind of problem that takes generations to fix, if it even can be fixed.
