a) Priorities, people! (There are folks in Latin American slums that don’t have power or running water, but do have stylish new clothes.)
b) I doubt it’s practical to pawn half-used makeup, even the expensive stuff, so if her poverty hit fairly quickly, she might still have some leftover stuff.

@Alanasolo
This is my headcanon, too.
@ShimmeringStallion
It is not only about the trophy but also the fame and the contracts that come with it. Suris plan would actually have worked if it wasn´t for Coco.
Edited
Much later, I definitely agree. Seems to have been a big-city thing, where she let it get to her (and Rarity doesn’t).
Her demeanor really makes me feel like she was like Rarity at first, but was taken advantage of to the point where it hardened her.
Ooh, I like that.
“It takes some small-town fillies a while to learn it’s everypony for herself in the big city, m’kay?” I always thought she was referring to herself in that scene.
@ShimmeringStallion
Outside of Flim and Flam, who’ve pretty much been given a free pass to be swindlers, I highly doubt that’s gonna be an option in Suri’s canon future =( .
It’d be cool to see though. I mean, I’d hate her even more for it, but it’d still be cool to see.
Edited because: Characters being jerks!
After much consideration, just… show more Suri or something… C’mon… Hasbro…
I think I’d like to see a scenario where Suri stays all ruthless, shameless, underhanded, etc. but makes it so the rewards are reaped by herself and a friend instead of just herself.
I almost feel like it’d be a Gilda-situation. She has to make the push to better her life, but Coco would be there for the moral support, regardless of her decision, aside from poor or negative decisions, which Coco would discourage.
Alternatively, maybe Suri hasn’t changed, but Coco believes that giving Suri the power she wants and showing her how fragile a second chance can be, would be the way to get Suri to see how bad of a pony Suri is. To back this up, in Season 5, Episode 9, err, lemme spoiler-tag this… A pony in a disco ball is seen as fashion, with the theme that anything can be worn and called fashion. But what if Suri was the one with that idea, wanting to bring Coco down, thinking she would take her place, only to just damage Coco’s credibility, leading to the ponies of Manehatten shaming Coco for the designs. Unexpectedly, Coco takes all the blame, causing Suri to feel guilty about not having any of the blame placed on her, the real cause of Coco’s problems. She eventually comes to terms with how bad she is, tries leaving Coco for her attempted sabotage, but Coco tells her that nothing is more important to her, than making sure Suri is okay, and that the fame means nothing if it will only cause a rift between them, hugging Suri in response.
… but, like, you know, th-that’s… one possibility…
Easy. They’d both design, unrelated to one another.
Alternatively: Coco focuses more on making plays, leaving Suri to have fashion.
Alternatively: Suri gets out of fashion entirely, her name too disgraced/the realization she can’t compete with Rarity/others, and goes into some other trade, or marries a rich stallion (griffon, zebra, whatever).
Well hey, you inspired it! I just responded, and what happened, happened! :P
I’d love to see a continuation of this comic. There really ISN’T a “happily ever after” that’s possible from this scene. She’s starving, broke, cold, and homeless. There’s plenty to address. Even if she went to live with Coco, would she REALLY be content with Coco as the designer?
Well, until now I didn’t really have any desire to know her backstory, but after your speculation…
You’re the first one I’ve seen doing it with Suri though.
That’s pretty much a third of FIMfiction content, right there! :P
It’s fun coming up with backstories for underexplored characters, isn’t it?
I had completely forgotten “Manehatten”. I first thought it was “Las Pegasus” until I convinced myself it was Baltimare. Heh…
Also, of course NMM is depraved; Hell, the first monologue of the SHOW addressed her Envy… Discord, I dunno if he’s depraved considering what he wants was only gained upon him learning of it in season Three. Trixie, definitely, Sombra, I think he’s just insane in the show… I shouldn’t go over everyone; there’s been a lot. And we don’t need to bother with Chrysalis; saying she’s depraved is like saying snow is white and cold; Changelings were based around depravity.
And perhaps that’s the point; for being LESS depraved, she comes across as not being “forced” into that state she was in. She did so because she was a terrible pony, and thus, no redemption is sought for her by the writers.
… Hell, even Lightning Dust was given more of a Backstory in the newest season; Suri’s got nothing!
Being a fashion designer worthy of discussion usually takes a considerable amount of time and effort, and there’s little to no guarantee of Rarity being the first of Suri’s victims. In fact, Suri could have easily had a mentor-figure who taught her about the importance of being number one, only to fall to her. Not die , just, you know, be betrayed. Maybe she just saw a trophy that was really, really, really, REALLY sparkly, and wanted it. We have no idea. And that’s what makes her so disliked. We’re given nothing when it comes to reasons to cling on to Suri. Suri doesn’t have any story.
She’s sort of just “Rival Designer” and that’s it.
How depraved do you have to be? Less depraved than the villains who tried to do things like permanently remove daytime from existence, leave a princess for dead in an abandoned mine as part of a plot to infiltrate her marriage, and use time travel to undo a few specific bonds of friendship either out of sheer spite or a devotion to a twisted vision of utopia.
Also it’s Manehattan, not Baltimare. The episode is named Rarity Takes Manehattan. I don’t think we’ve seen Baltimare yet.
@Background Pony #1AF8
Very true. If anything, her down-to-earthness might make her villainy feel more ‘real’ than, say, Discord’s, and that might rub people the wrong way. I mean, that’s the reason I like her more than the other villains, but sometimes one person likes something for the exact same reason someone else dislikes it. I actually think that phenomenon can be pretty interesting.
But yeah, she does seem to be more liked than Sombra, even though he has over ten times her pics. I do wish Tirek was used more too. He’s cool.
The problem is just that; her morals are totally screwed up and she was never properly humbled. Like… who asks someone to NOT give someone a trophy? How depraved do you have to be, in every way, to accept “She wasn’t better than me, I have the trophy.” and ignore everything else about those circumstances!?
That’s… considerably messed up… It’s impressive that neighday even keeps them local; if anything, you’d think she’d buy a ticket and move far away, not… stay in Baltimare… What was even LEFT for her? She had nothing, but seemingly cherished nothing, either. She still had a fashion line, though… so why wouldn’t she just “exist but not be in the same place as she was?”
More I think about it, more it hurts.
