The emotion causes the eyes to convert (? - liquid) to (? - gas) - thus, it needs soul to occur, at least until we understand more.

Hm, I removed the Tirek-part… If this is true, it’s quite possible that Tirek’s method of draining magic literally drains the magic catalyst from a pony’s eyes. If the catalyst is embedded in the membrane, this is horrifying… Especially due to the fact that we can hear Twilight making cries of pain when it happens - it seriously could be tearing parts out of the cell-membranes of her irises. Ow.

Hm… Now that I think about it, the ‘glow’ that we see could be the intermediate which allows magic to control things even when the horn has no access to the air?

Also, the glow thing means it’d not work while in the hazmat suit (gas can’t go through in either direction), meaning it’s not caused by gas and the magic is very likely not physical. Rarity blocking spiral blocking magic could be just pattern disruption - e.g. if you prevent part of program code from executing, entire program will likely stop working - with physical-magic being unnecessary.

Oh, forgot to mention it in the post, but my go-to theory for the catalyst is… it sits embedded in the iris membrane. The Iris is made from cells.
