I miss the show so much
@Ciaran
I already clean up multiple tags 2-3 times a day. Adding one more aliasing dumping grounds tag into the mix won’t be a problem. The initial cleanup can be, but it gets easier after that. And if the tag’s usage and purpose is widely known, I probably wouldn’t be the only person cleaning it up.

Even with moderator tools, I can only bulk edit 1 tag on 50 images at a time, and it’s not unusual to sometimes get batches of a thousand or more. And the tool sometimes takes a minute to process the last request - if you go too fast, it can get … messy. And that’s only after I have hand aliased the tags to the invalid tag to reduce it to one tag. Then there’s often dozens of unaliasings to do.

Sure, it’s “easy”. But it can take hours, usually across multiple days.

They way I understand “cleaning up” is easy: just regularly remove the dumping grounds tag from every image, as it effectively coalesces all the useless tags into one.

But, right now at least those ‘art’ and ‘artist ‘ tags seem, on the surface at least, to not be causing any problems. Unless I’m missing something?
They don’t cause problems, they’re just useless. Noise. Filler. They make tag lists longer without actually adding any data.

That is just how I use it. I’m sure other staff have other uses for it.

And, the easy part of the cleaning isn’t all that easy. Even with mod tools I spend an hour or more some weeks going through it.

Perhaps if we could all agree what some filler tags like
art
and artist
mean, how and when they should be used, properly document everything in their descriptions and kick start their proper usage… perhaps then they could stay. Otherwise I keep recommending them to be simply deleted on sight. We could also create an actual “dumping grounds” tag and alias every useless filler tag into it. It could be easily cleaned up.

Is it a general-purpose dumping grounds, or is it just for spammy clothes-related tags? I don’t know. It has no explanation.
The way I use it is to trap tags that persistent tag vandals use. I check the tag every week or so, and look through the tag changes or uploads that resulted in the
invalid tag
result, and then I can find the ban evaders doing more of the thing that got them banned in the first place. Once those people age out of the fandom, or when the tags become properly formed and are something we want on the site, I remove the aliases for those specific ‘problem’ tags.Others use it in other ways.
But, for what I am using it for, it seems to be the best way right now to catch ‘certain individuals’ who are incapable of following this site’s rules or practices, or insist on vanity tags that they as their personal galleries or filters.
@Dragonpone, @JP
Well, I recommend un-aliasing “mlpartist”, “mlpart”, and “mylittleponyart” because it seems like a worse situation to have to weed those out from “artist” and “art” than for those tags to merely need periodic clearing.
It seems to me that
mlpart
and mylittleponyart
are just another way of saying art
. And mlpartist
is another way of saying artist
.A lot of this stuff comes from bulk uploading programs, especially stuff like ‘postybirb’ - the kinds of things that people use when they’re posting on more than one site - like artists that are mainly furry but tag their MLP specific art with ‘mlpart’.
Having a way to automagically sort them into valid-er (or at last not completely wrong) tags is useful.
Now, as to whether ‘artist’ and ‘art’ are useful tags, that could be a discussion. For example, I think
artist
works for images like this:I think
art
is valid on that image as well (although it is already tagged painting
).What do you think?

I don’t love those tags (and I can’t comprehend how you came to that conclusion after I first suggested they get blackholed into “invalid tag”).
I didn’t ask them to be aliased into “invalid tag” because I don’t know how that tag works. Is it a general-purpose dumping grounds, or is it just for spammy clothes-related tags? I don’t know. It has no explanation. If it’s a general-purpose garbage tag, then sure, re-alias them. (I know many junk tags I’d ask to be aliased immediately.)
Inversely, I hate the notion that there’ll be an increase in wrong application of the tags “art” and “artist”.
TBH those tags should be permanently purged. Neither of them serves any purpose except bloating tag lists with filler junk.
There will still need to be periodic cleaning, except instead of being obvious, it’ll require scrutiny of posts that are now mixed into the tags “art” and “artist”.
See above.

I’m puzzled as of why you love these three random junk tags (“mlpartist”, “mlpart”, “mylittleponyart”) so much that you want them to be unaliased and then periodically cleaned manually?

The whole purpose of those aliases is to get rid of the “periodic cleaning”. They’re used by people who don’t know (or don’t bother to learn) how tagging works here, so they type whatever random “mlp”-prefixed garbage they can think of into the tag box, hoping that at least something sticks, bloating the tag lists with useless junk.

Look at the aliases list of
g4
for example. At some point, I did routinely, or semi-routinely, search and check many of those tags, to find incorrectly tagged images. Those aliases exist for the sole reason so that the machine does it for humans. It auto-corrects those errors.Tagging Discussion » Multiple misspelled filler tag aliases » Post 6

They could be, but I’m not how that tag works. It seems to be the dumping grounds for various clothes-related tags at the moment.

Surely, “mlpartist”, “mlpart”, and “mylittleponyart” should be aliased to invalid tag instead of artist and art, then?

TBH I’d remove all “art”, “artwork” and probably some other fillter tags completely, if I could.

If you do not specify a field to search over, the search engine will search for posts with a body that is similar to the query's word stems. For example, posts containing the words winged humanization
, wings
, and spread wings
would all be found by a search for wing
, but sewing
would not be.
