As I mentioned here before, Shel (Born Norman David Shapiro) formed a band with fellow English expatriates in Italy called The Rokes, where they found success in a unique and rather different spin on the “British Invasion” phenomenon. He has also worked as an actor, and still performs his music.

Love Affair - Everlasting Love, Hush (Joe South cover), So Sorry, Rainbow Valley, The Tree and Build On Love

From the debut album by the English (From London) Blue-eyed soul/Psychedelic pop/Rock band, “The Everlasting Love Affair” (1968)

The biggest hit by the band, all just teenagers at the time of their success, is their cover of “Everlasting Love”, a song that was written by American songwriters Buzz Cason and Mac Gaydon and first recorded by the American singer Robert Knight. It became a #1 hit for the Love Affair in he UK.

Though the band shows their natural talents elsewhere on the album, this song and some of the other singles released from it were in fact recorded by the band’s singer Steve Ellis with a 40-piece orchestra and session musicians for the rhythm section. This was commonplace at the time for bands and artists, but in the band’s case this was done as a quick way to release the single in time. Nevertheless, this move garnered them some controversy, with record producer Jonathan King cornering Steve Ellis about it on a television program he was presenting. Nonplussed, Ellis admitted to it and moved on regardless.

Beyond that, this band are well worth checking out for people into 60s music like I am. Steve Ellis went on to enjoy some solo success, and fronted other bands in different styles ranging from Progressive rock and Folk rock to Hard rock and Heavy metal. He remains a respected cult hero in the history of British Rock singing. Drummer Maurice Bacon also co-founded a Prog band with Love Affair organist Morgan Fisher, Morgan, before going on to found his own music publishing company, humorously titled “The Bacon Empire Ltd.”. Fisher later went on to play with the Glam rock band Mott The Hoople.
