I just got back from seeing Inside Out 2, and I loved it! I think it’s on par with the first movie; the story was really well thought out and the characters all played their part as you’d expect. When the main emotions get sent to the vault of secrets, we see she keeps things like a Bluey/Dora the Explorer character, and Final Fantasy anime character from a fighting game, and a shadowy beast that is just her darkest secret. Joy sents Sadness up to headquarters for when they need to get called back, so like the first film where it was Joy and Sadness on an adventure, now she’s doing one with Fear, Anger, and Disgust.
Anxiety is just what I expected, Envy is so adorable I just love it, Ennui is hilarious and I like they gave him a french accent, and Embarrassment is a good person; he doesn’t talk throughout the movie which I think was a clever choice, and the friendship he ends up having with Sadness was nice. We also get Nostalgia as an emotion, but she stays behind a closed door the whole movie.
Going through Riley’s mind again but with some new editions like the river of thoughts, the “Sar-cassum”, her imagination land where Anxiety has turned it into a workshop for probabilities, and when they need to come up with an idea it creates a brain storm.
Comedic bits aside, I also like how in this movie it isn’t just the memory orbs that control Riley’s mind but also the strings of consciousness which are suppose to dictate Riley as an overall person (she believes herself to be a good person essentially). When the demo crew come to renovate, they alter the console in a way that makes Riley overreact with just the slightest touch, so it certainly shows just how overdramatic teens can be, and of course at the end of the movie the new and old emotions all work together as a team, and Anxiety manages to find the right way to work with Joy so even though they set her up to be the antagonist they found a solution to help each other out. Also we see the parents’ Anxiety just to show that they other emotions exist in other people, just kept in the back.
Overall, I really enjoyed this film and I’m really hoping it does well because Disney and Pixar REALLY need to get back on track after the lousy releases recently; Lightyear was a disaster, and while I enjoyed Elemental it did not do so well unfortunately. I really do want the company to start putting out successful films again, so here’s hope for Inside Out 2.
