I like the fact that nobody was perfect, everybody had something to learn this episode. 4 out of 5. A couple of notes:

  1. In episode 2 Fluttershy knew the manticore was in pain and her kindness overcame any fear she had, so I think her acting scared here wasn’t all that odd. Not to mention Trixie’s description of it as pony-eating.

  2. Don’t blame the writers for triggering your vore hate. I abhor the fetish myself but getting swallowed is a classic cartoon trope.

  3. I think the manticore was in on the act. They’re intelligent, at least as much as any other animal like Fluttershy’s friends (books go into this much more), and he bowed at the end of the show. If Trixie hadn’t been teleported, I think she was ready for an awkward, messy, painfully embarrassing climb out of the manticore’s gut, to the boos and/or laughter of the crowd.

  4. It’s great seeing behind Trixie’s bluster once again. She builds this impressive facade of bravado but inside she’s really vulnerable.

Wow! Glimmer
Yeah, she keeps reminding everyone else of what she did. Maybe the thinking is we’ll forgive her if she feels bad about it.

That’s not a good move on the writers part, since it makes her redemption seem half-baked. Judging by the fan reaction to this episode, they’re on thin ice with Glimmer.

Apropos to nothing, I think I remember reading somewhere that the Cakes more or less consider Pinkie their adoptive daughter or somesuch. But I can’t remember if that was from a tweet, Pinkie’s chapter book, or just some fanon. Does that sound familiar to anyone?

Not intending anything or really but this is just for the people who’re absolutely convinced that this redemption was totally Hasbro’s idea.

I wouldn’t say so given the reasoning for it handing overhead like the sword of Damocles or whoever the fuck.
It’s not like that’s going “muh past, I’m not even going to try” as much as it is (as she constantly says) “muh past, I think it will fuck up my trying”. It’s quite understandable confliction, and hell unlike where Sunset let that stop her from helping until the end of rainbow rocks, Starlight was more than will to stand up and strike when the situation called for it. She did with Sunburst and she did it when stood up to Twilight twice, for herself and for dumb-dumb.

Really, I’ve seen more Star favor than then dislike. If anyone is in the dog house it’s twilight.

The “until now” is because i haven’t watched all of the episodes. namely, i haven’t watched “The Best Night Ever”, “The Cutie Map”, half of Season 2 and Season 4, and all episodes in Season 3 but “Too Many Pinkie Pies”.

So here’s a question. How would you have written Twilight differently in this episode? I’m not trying to start the, “Well if you hate it so much, why don’t you do better?” kind of argument, but it’s just something I want to see from people who are complaining about Twilight’s character.

@Jades
I’m still not entirely convinced. I think it’s most likely Hasbro wanted them to introduce a new character and the writers weren’t quite sure how to do it (see MA Larson’s tweet about him and Haber not being sure what to do with Starlight), so they created a new character and took a gamble, hoping it’d work. I’m also starting to think they had a lot more planned for Starlight’s backstory and reformation, but were forced to trim it down because it would take too much time to accomplish and Hasbro wanted Glimmer to be part of the Mane Cast by the end of the season.

I dunno: I see a lot of people complaining that Starlight is drifting into Mary Sue territory.

@DaKurgan
Exactly. They’d be better off dropping subtle hints rather than out and out reminding the audience of her nefarious deeds.

I had no problem with it, but if I were to try to make more appeal to all, I’d make the moments where makes an appeal with Star (i.e. the scene in the castle where she lets go and the bush scene where she lets starlight knows that she’s doing such with good intentions) more sappy or softer. I don’t know about you all, but I rather liked the drama and tension that came with Twi, Starlight, and Dumb-dumb get under their skins and the mistakes they’ve made, but I can say that by doing what I suggest I think it would be a fair way for me to keep what I like and yet make it easier for others to swallow and maybe even see it my way.

I think that’s fair, right?

Lampshade hanging is a common trick to address a plothole or otherwise messy subject in a story. Of course, yeah in this case I feel it just reminds us all how poorly written the ending of last season’s finale was.

This. Pointing out a problem doesn’t fix the problem.
