I do question on whether they even thought Glimmer through. She feels like the writers took something out of fan fiction and tried to make it canon while having her narrative importance lead up to nothing. She’s pretty much the definition of a stereotypical bad OC.

You completely missed the point and the difference between Starlight and Discord.
 
Discord is a creature who NEVER had any friends (beside mindless Ooze) so meeting a first talking person like FLuttershy who liked him the way he is and haven’t dismissed him as a typical vilain that need to die (like mane5 and Spike did) was a schocking and eye opening experience for him. He desired to share his jokes and chaos with someone and that was more important than enjoying it only for himself. And his reformation wasn’t fast at all, he got only hooked to it and disarmed by FLuttershy. He was still the same jerk he was in the past, but just controlled himself and from time to time learn more about living with other ponies.
 
Starlight reformation is completly ridiculous. Apparently after a childhood friend forgot to play with her, she abandoned all of her friends she ever met before or after him, apparently she also had no parents or any family member to support her and was just living alone under a bridge with no friends or foster parents because she copletely turned into an extreme left wing maniac obsessed in brainwashing other ponies into forsaking their destinies.  
And her follow up fow even less beleivable. She lost her charisma, leadership and cunning that she earned her entire “villanious” life experience and was lobotomised to act like some generic good and confused Fluttershy just because Twilight told her to be good and that she will become her friend/teacher. She somehow instantly relaised that her entire life experience and values were bad and somehow a charismatic manipulator was manipulated by Twilight into becoming her follower. This stuff doesn’t make sense, and i would like to see a that happening in real life. It would be like 30 year old racist who acted that way his whole life changing in just a day just because he met a person who says that racism is bad. It doesn’t work this way.
