@cheezedoodle
I didn’t see offense. I have no real reason to think they meant anything negative when they wrote it.
I was simply saying that I found it kind of amusing that something like this would slip by.
Oh of course, all that much is obvious. I just think those people are part of what’s wrong with the world today–seeing offense where there is none intended.
@cheezedoodle
She is very strongly based off on traditional sub-Saharan African culture and people. People often see her as a stand-in for black people because of that, so saying “zebra face” will make a number of those people think of the unfortunate tradition of “blackface”. That is all, AFAICR.
@Smudge_Proof
I have no idea what you’re saying at this point, and will just reiterate that I can’t see any way in which her dialogue is controversial or “unfortunate.”
@cheezedoodle
I know. I was just remarking on the unfortunate connotation that a number of people, including myself, caught here to ‘blackface’, and which seems to have gone unnoticed by people at IDW.
There’s a lot of definitions for “face” and I don’t think this is using the literal definition (her actual face).
“Face” can also used as just another word for a type of person, i.e. “I see there’s a lot of new faces around here” just means “new people” not literally “new faces.”
@untraceablelarry
Reminded me of The Cleveland Show’s “happy mustache face”, which would have been black guy face till they realized the problem with that. I even did the “he he he he” to myself when I read it.
@Evowizard25
I knew that, which is why labeling her sociopathic would be an exaggeration.
I think that is the dumbest sounding rhyme I’ve ever heard out of Zecora. “I’m the only Zebra face”, really? Is there a further context to which that sounds less stupid?
It wasn’t so much what Lightning Dust did so much as her attitude about it. If she’d been apologetic, she’d be sympathetic. If she just didn’t know what went wrong, well, we love a pegasus like that. But her attitude can be summed up as “Risk? I don’t care about that. I’m too focused on being the best to concern myself with anypony else’s well-being.”
@Itsthinking
Well maybe she wouldn’t have been like that if Spitfire wasn’t goading her into continuing that line of thinking, instead of correcting it. {Yeah, Spitfire was the real jerk of that episode.}
