Rarity & Sassy Saddles: No!
You know sumo wrestlers are revered in Japan and they are huge.
This thing still grosses me out.
She’d have legs like a workhorse.
Are you kidding? They’d be looking at her like “We’re gonna be earning our money today.”
Hehe cute! :D
She needs more fanart love.
Someone already did, and she looks adorable (if a bit large):
No, there was no “body-shaming” whatsoever.
And frankly, her hugeness makes her kinda unique/adorable.
I hope that wasn’t the case. Their looks of disbelief of how big she was before doing that “NO!” and laughing almost felt like someone was being a bit mean spirited.
Now somebody draw her in an ill-fitting “Princess” dress she wanted so badly. :P
Yeah… Kind of makes me wonder what was going through their minds, when they decided to add this.
Don’t get me wrong though, this was a pretty good episode, I loved concept of it and I thought it was handled really well. I’d give it an 8/10 rating.
That is true, and I can agree 100%. But to me, this scene seemed too far out of the norm by MLP standards.
It’s a weird moment no matter how you look at it, though. Seriously, the whole design is just… out there.
Now that you put it that way, It actually does make more sense. I think I was so focused on how overweight this pony was, that I interpreted it the wrong way. As you said, It really wasn’t her weight that was the issue, it was just the dresses being sold out.
I guess my issue with this scene is, it could have been handled better. For me it was too sudden, too far out of the norm for MLP.
I dunno, I don’t think the joke would’ve worked like that. The joke isn’t “this pony is fat!” so much as “this pony has a really non-standard character design” (Bulk Biceps is a good comparison; the whole joke is that his design doesn’t match the art style at all). Like DoomPony said, the joke would’ve been functionally the same with a non-fat pony so long as the design was sufficiently bizarre. And I think that’s where the crux of the issue is: the joke isn’t the fatness, it’s that the pony looks nothing like any of the other ponies that have appeared on the show, so her sudden appearance is a bit of a shock.
But it’s never implied in-universe that she’s being mocked or belittled for it. The only reason that they refuse her request is because they discontinued the dress she wanted. Her size has nothing to do with that.
How chubby are we talking? A Mrs. Cake recolor wouldn’t have been unusual. The joke (if you consider it one) would have also worked with a super-tall thin pony, like a standard filly body with Celestia’s legs. Imagine that for a second, Sweetie Belle with Celestia’s legs.
Eh…kinda depends on where you live, IME. Southern states seem to have the biggest problem, no pun intended, but northern cities, e.g. Detroit, have obesity problems, where there’s a large low-income population. The underlying problem is readily available, very cheap, high-carbohydrate foods. It doesn’t help that our government subsidizes corn disproportionately, and therefore, indirectly, the production of corn syrups, i.e. high-carb sugars.
Blame the food.
…And genetics, I guess.
