What is wrong with them just being there own thing?

You know what looking at IDW pic here its look like strange perspective. Compare Twinkleshine height to other. From right to left they only get smaller. But other thing maybe ponies have growth spurts (if dog can mature practicaly in half of year from tiny ball to big dog then why not them and freaking magic)
 
Iirc Shining Armor and Cadance are in that frame too, off to the left. Looking at how big they look would tell us how much of Twilight’s size is just due to perspective.
