I don’t know. What if thanks to SG, there is no Trixie anymore by the end of the ep?…
@LanceOmikron
to say nothing of her nigh-constant bedroom eyes
Sexpot Glimmer.
Everything you’re saying about her only enhances her as a villain in my eyes. You’re right, she doesn’t use outright coercion or outstanding combat skills, she dominates through sheer magnetism of her personality and manipulation, and uses traps and the element of surprise to beat more powerful enemies. They didn’t rebel because they trusted her, and when the occasional dissenter tried, she would turn the group against them.
Perhaps even more compelling is the fact that she didn’t do any of this for wealth, or material gain, or for the sake of evil itself (which has always been the most flimsy villainous justification). She did it out of equal parts lust for power and to enforce an ideology that she believed in, which makes her more realistic than any villain in MLP so far.
She also didn’t know the time spells despite having access, she just hadn’t read that book before,
All comics are of dubious canon, and news flash young adults shout bullshit at their elders all the time, and again before putting on the crown she was at worst a massive jerk, not an evil monster who threatened the world,
Twi never bothered to look them up? Twi? Yeah, no, not buying it. I’m also not buying the idea that Celestia volunteered the info to Sunset. Why tell her about that but not the alicorn spell?
Okay, sorry, but that’s it. There’s no way you’re not trolling at this point. Sunset was browsing the dark magic section of the library, and when caught she told Celestia “I deserve to stand beside you and be your equal, if not your better” to her face, with those exact words. If those aren’t blatant warning signs that someone has fallen to the wrong path, then nothing is. What, does she need to wear a sign that says “I AM TURNING EVIL”?
That was the last conversation they had, by the way (or at least, the last one we know they had). Considering Sunset was unrepentant, Celestia had no reason to think that Sunset would suddenly come back and apologize.
Anyways, Starlight Glimmer is a way better villain. Rather than relying on stupid writing, she actually used her own skills to become a legitimately scary threat. She’s charismatic, manipulative, magically gifted, and thoroughly twisted. She’s what Sunset Shimmer should have been.
It’s not like Tia Purged all knowledge of them from the world, Twi just never bothered to look them up before, or given Sunset’s more mature personality, Tia may have told her about them herself,
Why wouldn’t she? She had no way of knowing Sunset had gotten that bad, and she was as close as Twilight, it would be even weirder if she didn’t let her know about things like Luna being redeemed, if she knew Sunset was in the human world, she may even have told her they would be at the conference and had the mirror brought there just in the hope Sunset would comeback, not expecting her to pull such a stunt, and the portal lasted several days, shimmer probably planned to find the crown where ever it was, it just happened to be closer then normal,
She studied the alicorn transformation, not the element of magic. Like I said, there’s no way she could have known about the element of magic. I dare you to try and explain it.
Possible, but that’s assuming a heck of a lot. Plus, that would fall under other characters acting like idiots. Celestia had no reason to tell Sunset about the things that she would have needed to enact her plan.
Umm she studied it before leaving, she thought it was meant for her, and it’s likely Tia kept writing to her even if Shimmer stopped replying, including telling her about major events, so in case Shimmer was in Equestria somewhere she would know, or just because she wanted to talk, and felt Sunset was a good wall to bounce her thoughts off of, notice that her breaking up the Human five came around the same time Twilight and company came together,
Okay, rather than beat around the bush with little details, let me give it to your straight:
Sunset Shimmer’s modest success as a villain had nothing to do with her own skill as a character. It had everything to do with lucky coincidences, impossible knowledge, other characters acting like idiots, and just generally bad writing.
Want examples?
Lucky Coincidences: The crystal mirror just happens to open up right as the princesses are having a summit, and Twilight just happens to have the Element of Magic with her.
Impossible Knowledge: How does she know the elements of harmony are restored? How does she know that the element of magic exists (remember, it was a complete mystery until Twi rediscovered it), and how does she know what it looks like? How does she know that taking the element of magic into another world will allow her to use it? How did she know that the Element of Magic would be in the crystal castle during the period the mirror was open? How did she know where Twilight’s room was? None of this is ever explained.
Other characters acting like idiots: If the HuMane five had simply talked to each other, Sunset’s plan to break them up would have never worked.
Yeah she pretty much did, even Rarity couldn’t manage to beat her in a fucking popularity contest, that means she was playing a huge part of the school,
She wasn’t using it to bind people though, she was using it to try and out right murder them, that probably takes way less power, and again she could control almost any normal pony or human, so she would have the army not them,
lol no.
Ok, I’ll give it to you that Twi would have been dead. I will not give you any of the stuff after that. Sunset was using the element of magic imperfectly. It wasn’t anywhere near the sort of power that the Mane Six use it at.
Indeed, Celestia is not invincible. That said, Sunset conquering Equestria with the plan we saw is still expecting a heck of a lot. I mean, what would happen if everypony bum-rushed her and knocked the crown off? It’s not like it’s an unremovable alicorn amulet or anything.
…For that matter, would she even still be able to use the Element of Magic once she takes it back into Equestria? That seems like a rather huge flaw.
Wrong, Sunset basically made it so no one group was willing to work with any other, and set her self up as the one person in school that was able to influence all of them, that is way beyond normal bully, that is a level of manipulation Discord needed magic to do,
Twi would have been dead, She was running off of one of the most powerful artifacts in the world, and could mind control any normal person and likely pony she encountered, Tia and Luna and Cadence wouldn’t have been able to compete with her, even Discord may have been out matched by the power of the crown, only the foundations of the potentially even greater Rainbow power was able to put an end to her,
When you put it that way, Starlight Glimmer, and Alicorn-amulet-possessed Trixie had a better shot at taking over Equestria.
Though, Sunset Shimmer was a bit genre-savvy at times, so she might’ve had a few back-up plans, (or perhaps there was more to her plan then she claimed, perhaps she planned on “powering-up” her “army,” like she did Snips & Snails) and it’s arguable how powerful she became. (After all, Queen Chrysalis when she got powered-up was able to nock out, and trap Celestia, so she’s not some invincible god-horse like some fans assume.)
She was just a normal school bully for several years. Nothing special about that.
Storm Equestria and take over, you say?
Yeah, I’m sure one demon-pony and a few mind-controlled teenage humans-turned-ponies will face no resistance at all from six very clever friends (one of whom is a powerful alicorn), three other powerful alicorns, and all of the guards in the crystal empire, all of whom are waiting literally right on the other side of the portal (sans Twilight, but she won’t be far behind).
And there’s absolutely no way that Cadance could activate the crystal heart or anything to ruin Sunset’s day. And there’s also no way that Celestia and Fluttershy could call up Discord either. Yeah, sure. There are absolutely no flaws with Sunset’s plan at all. She’ll conquer Equestria completely unopposed.
Seriously, what?
If she hadn’t done that one trick, Twi would have curb stomped her,
She preemptively made sure the human versions of the biggest threats to her were broken up, used her knowledge of Celestia to trick her human counter part and avoid being caught doing her bullying, and if not for sudden friendship magic would have won, and been able to storm equestria, and take over, all with no magic untill the end part,
I’ll admit, I only saw the premiere once, so I can’t make much argument about what’s implemented in Starlight’s actions.
But I couldn’t say see was Sombra level evil. Starlight isn’t exactly Dangerous Savvy. See didn’t force the ponies of the town to give up their cutie marks, it was more implied that they argreed with whatever she said to them and went with it.
As a matter of fact, they could have just as easily gotten their cutie marks back just like how they easily rebelled against Starlight when her equal mark was fake. It wasn’t like the cave was heavily guarded, booby trapped or otherwise. Heck, even Night Glider explained that they occasionally go there to lament. Even the Staff of Sameness was lying around (I think).
So, yeah, either the ponies arent so bright or Starlight’s plan, whatever it might truly be, was a hit and miss.
That’s all I got to say.
What? What in the heck are you talking about? Sunset was a terrible villain. Okay, everything up until she goes in the Crystal mirror is just fine. You couldn’t ask for a better start of darkness than The Fall of Sunset Shimmer. But after that, everything just goes downhill for her as a villain. She spends several years winning proms and breaking up friends, then comes back to Equestria and steals a crown that she couldn’t possibly know about, because apparently taking an element of harmony into another world allows anyone to use it (seriously, how the hell did she know that? She can’t, yet somehow still does).
Where is the Discord/Tirek level stuff you’re talking about?
I didn’t say “equal to Twilight”, I just said powerful enough to pose a threat. And a cheap trick? Really? Starlight uses magic the likes of which has never been seen on the show before (the closest we’ve seen being Tirek) without any sort of assistance, and you call it a cheap trick? Man, it takes a lot to impress you.
You’re right, she ain’t no Trixie.
