Indeed, the puns are a necessity. Though we may hide him away at times, there’s a little bit of Carlos in the hearts of MLP fans everywhere.
Horse puns are a treasured tradition of MLP. It’d be crazy for people not to use them in fan works. ^^

I’m so glad fanfic continues the proud tradition of horse puns in the titles.
Okay, well The Dresden Fillies is a trilogy of fics. It starts off with Strange Friends, which opens with Harry fleeing from monsters in the Nevernever. He randomly opens up a rift to escape, and ends up in Equestria. He meets the Mane Six, but then Spike gets kidnapped and he helps them find him. Adventures ensue.
Whenever the story is told from Harry’s perspective, it uses the traditional Dresden Files first-person narration, and it is done so incredibly well that you’d swear Jim Butcher himself is writing it.
He later goes back to visit in the second fic, False Masks, and this time he brings Bob with him. ^_^
The final fic in the trilogy, Great Power, is currently ongoing.

I read a couple fanfics that crossed over with Harry a while ago, but I couldn’t tell you which one. Gimme some info on it and I’ll see if I’m familiar with it =) .

I’d just really enjoy seeing the idea get expounded on. For example, I’m a huge Dresden Files fan, and emotions fuel magic in that universe as well. The catch is, negative emotions have very, very bad consequences when used as your main power source.
I’d like to imagine that that’s what happened to both Sombra and Nightmare Moon. It would explain a lot. I mean, slipping down the slope to madness has to be easier if your magic is pushing you along too, right?
Indeed. Heck, Starlight’s anger magic was the same episode where she mentioned that magic used emotions.
Plus, going a bit further down that track, we’ve actually seen anger as magical fuel too, though in Starlight’s case only in the form of it being bottled up. If she willingly chose to rely on that emotion to fuel her magic all the time, well, the results could be pretty crazy.
I rather like the idea that the emotion you focus on while casting magic influences you as the caster, like jealousy for Luna when she became Nightmare Moon. With that in mind, emotions like grief, fear, and hatred could be downright disastrous.

IIRC, Inspired!Rarity just had her aura color changed from blue to bright green, a similar color to Chrysalis.
I like to think that dark magic is determined by emotion. Regular magic is fueled by good emotions like love, happiness, trust, etc., whereas dark magic comes from negative emotions like hate. Starlight did mention once that magic is fueled by emotion.
Good point. It’s not like MLP has ever had that much consistency, especially when it comes to world-building mechanics. Do you remember if Rarity’s Inspiration Manifestation green magic was similar to Chrysalis’ changeling magic? If so, maybe ponies call all magic that is not the usual aura “dark magic” (Sombra/Alicorn opaque magic, inspiration/changeling green magic, Discord’s plaid chaos magic, etc…).
Eh, these things can be a touch inconsistent. Remember when Twilight used her “alicorn magic” to activate Zecora’s flashback potion? It used the dark magic visuals for some reason, despite dark magic not being brought up. And in Inspiration Manifestation when Rarity was under the sway of that spell, her magic turned bright green but otherwise kept the same visual effects as regular unicorn magic. Twilight later referred to the spells cast by Inspired!Rarity as “dark magic”.
…but the magic auras they have are both the transparent pastel of normal magic instead of the opaque saturation of dark magic. The darkness certainly made their bodies blackened.
Well, one could make the argument that both Nightmare Moon and Chrysalis are beings that are almost entirely dark magic.
When you’re training unicorns of that power, it’s inevitable that more of them than anypony can bear will be seduced by the power of dark magic.
(Interestingly enough, I don’t think we ever saw Nightmare Moon or Chrysalis use dark magic: just normal magic for evil ends, unless you make the reasonable argument that changeling green magic is distinct from normal pony magic)
