This fandom grapples you in like the kraken itself, I swear.
A similar situation presented itself to me when I was on the fence about bronyism, but it was music, not art. During the time in which I was still rather confused as to why a television show meant for little girls had not only garnered an audience of adults, but straight male adults, by complete chance I happened upon a brony EDM artist on YouTube by the name of Wooden Toaster…
Not much else to say after that; I’m here now, aren’t I?
The artist stated explicitly that he realizes that the baneblade should be way, WAY bigger, but there was no way to fit it into the picture at anything approaching proper scale. Apparently there were supposed to be artillery guns in the background and such, but as soon as the tank was put in, it pretty much took up the entire image.
Also, he doesn’t actually play TT, so I’m guessing he looked at a top-down model from DoW or something and made his best guess.
@MadMachinist
I can only speak for myself, but when I started seeing ponifications of damn near everything, I was generally unimpressed.
Then I saw a Plague Marine pony in power armor. It was one of the most hilarious things I’d ever seen, and yet, somehow still seemed cool.
And then I was a brony.
Whilst the ponies here are done right, the weapons are a mile off what they should be.
The main gun is supposed to have a co-axial auto cannon mount.
The side sponsons are missing completely, and they should each have twin linked heavy bolters.
The las cannons are single weapons, mounted directly above the sponsons (not twin linked and mounted on the main body as they are here).
There should also be a twin linked heavy bolter turret just above where the driver’s window is in this picture.
Lastly, I think this particular Baneblade has been built in miniature.
It’s glaring lack of twin-linked, heavy bolters makes me cringe.
Well then, I must say, you have finally brought sense to a subject where I could not have imagined it possible.
Thank you very much.
Someday I too will be able to call upon this crossover in art yet to come…
Most of the weapon mounts on this “Baneblade” are wrong.
Still, fresh crossover art is always welcome.
Babs Seed: In the Princesses name, Ma’am.
I kind of hold myself partially responsible for interest in the crossover to a small degree (over 15% of Derpibooru’s 40k crossover images were uploaded by me. Doesn’t sound that impressive until I state that’s more than 150 images).
I was also known a couple of years back for doing 40k threads over on /mlp/ around once every 2-3 months. Haven’t been on there for a while because my computer keeps acting up, and I can’t upload images. (Embedded file messages nearly every time).
I’m also the first to do a full scale 40k themed pony army, (as far as I know there’s 3 more marine forces copying what I did since. Mystia’s >>738242, Another that I’m not sure of, >>669107 and >>669115 are from this force, and one of my regular gaming opponents has copied some of what I’ve done >>763848 is one of his.
I’d be the first to admit that Mystia’s army is much better painted than my own, but my own force is… slightly larger? >>557512 (this is an old pic and I’m pretty sure most will be familiar with it by now. The army’s a bit bigger now too. Need to get a fresh pic when I get the next few projects finished).
Anyway, as for why the crossover is so popular?
I guess the biggest reason is because of the sharp contrast between the universes. Like @Background Pony #B86B
stated, polar opposites seem to work.
That and because the ponies act so human, (more so than the actual humans in 40k), it’s easier to relate to them.
Seeing as a Baneblade’s supposed to have a crew of around 12, I’d say it’s probably half the school.
(Trying to work it out. Commander, who’s also the main turret gunner, Driver, at least 2 loaders, 2 sponson gunners for the heavy bolters, 2 more for the las cannons, demolisher cannon gunner and loader, front heavy bolter gunner (twin linked heavy bolter turret on the front), and an engineer). That’s 12.
At least it’s safe to say the commander’s not Diamond Tiara. The CMC’s haven’t been run over…..
You mix a grimderp setting, where everything is bad, was bad, will be even worse with a lollipo setting, where everything is good, was good and will be even better.
That and both MLP and Wh40k provide a massive sandbox for what’s known in table-top circles as “your dudes”, i.e. heavy degree of customization.
Viz. /tg/‘s Angry Marines chapter, for example.
Warmachine/Hordes, for instance, doesn’t crossover as well because everything is set firmly in stone and it’s hard to find overlaps between characters whereas Warhammer doesn’t crossover as well as its younger Sci-fi sibling because it’s nowhere near grimderp enough (and hence the contrasting factor is smaller… I mean, for the average observer, you’d just be drawing WoW ponies).
Among other things:
At first glance, it’s about as polar opposite a franchise as you can find?
Is there any real point in asking why?
