I personally would have prefered a mix of the happy and the dark ending, with audrey spared. That would set up everyone in the audience for a happy ending, then mindbuck them when the plant eats seymore and takes over the world. Instead, with her death, the sad ending becomes the default, and there’s no reason to be excited about the action-packed climax with Audrey II vs Seymour. We’d already be too bummed out to care.

The version of the movie with the original ending still has Mean Green Mother in it the song just ends differently with Audrey 2 eating Seymour before going into Don’t Feed The Plants.
