@Darth Sonic
The cuteness is the point!

Both good and bad.

Prudent, perhaps, but it has to be done carefully. As far as we can tell, Sunset and Celestia DID have this kind of motherly relationship. But add a lot of nepotism along with such high expectations…in other words, what Celestia does with Twilight, and puts her studies over almost everything and is never really punished, and you can get two very bad extremes. Be controlled, like Twilight since episode 1, or take control, like Sunset did.

So you must have in mind that Celestia doesn’t just take anypony as her student, but the ones that shown exceptional talents, and yet she focuses on only one at a time. And the reason the expectations are so extremely high is because Celestia sees her student as her successor. Which is very prudent, as any wise leader should ensure the continuity of power to avoid potential anarchy.

That’s ironic, considering you forgot the part where Sunset explains to Twilight what she experianced in her life BEFORE the comic.

Celestia held her students to such extremely high expectations, Twilight became a slave to them for her whole life, and Sunset tried to conquer them by abandoning her morals.

Neither student became well adjusted people because of her mentoring, but Sunset is ironically the first one to recover from it.

Sunset Shimmer abandoned her studies, because Celestia didn’t want to give her consent to Sunset bratty and selfish demands - “Celestia a horrible mentor”. Really, people either don’t follow the story or are stupid.

And this is what things might have been like if Celestia weren’t such a horrible mentor.
