Yeah, some of the ‘90s toys looked quite different from the TV show versions, but were still good.
 
Some were pretty well-detailed. My “Muckman” figure (child of the ‘90s here) had alot of great gross details on it. (Like garbage all over his body, and stuff.) So I don’t think they were so low-quality personally, or a “poor man’s Hasbro.”

I can’t really comment on the rest of the ’80s-’90s toys, though they generally look decent, but the Usagi figure is so hilariously exaggerated that I had to get one. (The Usagi toy from the ’00s toyline is pretty darn good, even if the pose is somewhat odd.)

Playmates toys doesn’t have much say-so over the TMNT series though, especially the 2003 series which was produced by Mirage, Dong Woo Animation, and 4Kids for the most part.
 
Also, I don’t know, their TMNT toys weren’t that bad. I had some back as a child of the ’90s.

You’d be surprised how paranoid some are… Like that Kwark guy who was fear-mongering that the “Rainbow Power” forms were going to be permanent new redesigns. Ironically, said forms were only in Season 4 for 2 minutes. (Apparently, people forgot their “Crystalized” forms from the “Crystal Empire” weren’t permanent either.)  
One guy said he believes Hasbro payed-off Lauren Faust to leave the show… There’s alot of conspiracy-nut fans around.

Calling it now, Season 5 the show gets rebooted/retconned into the future/space! :P (Just like the 2003 TMNT show did for a season.)
