Well the chance of Tirek overpowering and beating Discord to the point that he could drain his magic was so low that it was a calculated risk.
But if he did manage to steal the magic from Discird I’d assume they’d either go and try to attack him head on before he got any stronger or just go straight to giving Twilight their magic.
To answer that last question…
Absolutely nothing.
The princesses really don’t plan that far ahead.
The only opponent that Tirek know of was Twilight, but given that he didn’t know about her even a few hours ago, he really shouldn’t have assumed that she was the last opponent left.
If nothing else, his brother was still around somewhere, along with whatever allies he had collected in the past millenia and change.
Most importantly, Discord was flatly better at using his magic than Tirek was. Tirek resorted to just blasting Twilight, when Discord’s transformations would have been more effective, or at least more likely to make an opening against her. Keeping Discord around to fight Twilight made better tactical sense, even if he had a trump card. After all, if he couldn’t beat Twilight straight up, what guarantees that she can’t remove them from his grasp? Heck, Ponyville hadn’t been drained, so he was kinda lucky that no one there tried to free them while he was distracted.
Celestia and Luna were cautious about Tirek, but draining a load of ponies, even if they won in the end, even if they could restore them, would still be a bad thing. Letting people be hurt if they had an alternative is quite callous, although they might have just wanted to just get a location from Discord.
Tirek had to drain at least a few dozen ponies to get back into fighting shape. Tirek remaining hidden until he could take on organized and capable opposition, especially when Celestia could organize a manhunt over the entire country, was always a long shot. Especially since Scorpan was a friend of the ponies, even if he wasn’t close by.
…Wait…
Discord wasn’t immune to Tirek’s draining ability. What would they have done if Tirek did get in a lucky shot when Discord confronted him?
That’s the thing, though. While what he said was uninspired from a writing standpoint, it was obvious it would work on Discord. One of his primary character traits is being overly cocky and an enormous attention seeker.
I don’t really feel that he needed Discord after he had enough power. After all, the only opponent he had left at the time was Twilight, and having more direct power seemed more logical than having half of it entrusted to an ally who would likely just screw around the whole fight.
Tirek’s plan was ludicrously simple, but all villain plans in the show are. After all, it likely would have worked anyway. Tirek didn’t appear to need to be more powerful than someone to drain their magic. Just at a certain level to drain a certain type of power. Considering Celestia and Luna seemed worried about Tirek getting to them AND that they’d dealt with him before makes me think their fear was likely justified. Tirek didn’t really need Discord to continue his rampage. If Discord hadn’t showed up, he’d just drained ponies until he could take the princesses. Since he did, he just persuaded him to join his side and did the exact same thing. Attacking Equestria isn’t really rocket science.
Enh. Given that Tirek seemed to be caught off guard by Discord’s presence, I think that he was just trying to say anything that would keep Discord from tossing him back in the hole. What he said to Discord wasn’t particularly inspired, when you get down to it. He guessed that someone of Discord’s reputation and habits would be unhappy being constrained by pony society, and was right.
Frankly, I think that attacking Discord was just plain a stupid move on his part. Discord was definitely more skilled, and actually came across as smarter, if more mercurial. Keeping Discord on his side would have been the better move.
Tirek didn’t seem to have any plan beyond hoping that he could drain enough ponies to fight Celestia and Luna by the time that they caught up to him, either, so he probably would have lost with less damage caused if Discord didn’t show up to help him.
Excuse me for butting in; Just want to give an opinion. It really seemed Tirek had everything in the bag from the start, at least until finding out Twilight was a Princess, as well. While he wasn’t counting on Discord being free and teaming up with the ponies, Tirek almost immediately knew how to handle Discord. Even though he couldn’t overpower him at the time, Tirek pretty easily played on Discord’s emotional flaws and need for a “friend” with the shared interest of chaos. After a certain point, Discord was just along for the ride, despite having initially taken Tirek for that same purpose. He genuinely thought they had become friends, whereas Tirek was just keeping him like a pet of some sort until he was no more than a nuisance who would serve better just being drained.
Oh the hilarious irony of that statement coming from them.
if that were the case he would’ve been able to see how Twilight was undoing his brainwashing of the remain 5.
We know that he was capable of observing things when he wasn’t present, even when he was still a statue. However, he seems to be limited to looking at one place at a time. When Twilight undid his mindwhammy, he was preoccupied with tormenting Equestria, not watching her.
Ummm and why should that matter in a situation this important to nip in the bud right away?
Because if Discord doesn’t want tagalongs mooching off of his glory, he’s not going to take them. And Discord, among his other flaws, is massively arrogant. He considered Tirek a chance to look good, not a threat.
Frankly, I think that the only reason that Discord gave Tirek a chance to talk was because he was too weak to make for a fun challenge at the time.
if that were the case he would’ve been able to see how Twilight was undoing his brainwashing of the remain 5.
“You saw how excited Discord was to have his solo mission. Do you think he would have appreciated someone riding shotgun?”
Ummm and why should that matter in a situation this important to nip in the bud right away? (I think we’ll both agree Discord should just outright locked Tirek up a the start instead bantering with him)
Tirek wasn’t cleaning up, but he wasn’t sticking around, either. Finding a body shows where he was, not where he’s going. Leaving town right afterwards would complicate things immensely.
He could have been found through a conventional manhunt, admittedly, just not as quickly.
“might have insisted on going after him alone” now who’s the one assuming things?
You saw how excited Discord was to have his solo mission. Do you think he would have appreciated someone riding shotgun?
I find it a little too convenient of how now he has this magical disturbance detection ability for the sake of the plot
He’s actually the only person in the series that has previously displayed the ability to remotely view events, so it isn’t completely out of left field. Unlike, say, Celestia’s dreams, which have never provided a warning previously in the entire series.
Also? This series has a history of pulling out new abilities or rules whenever it suites the plot. Not that it’s bothered to define anyone’s abilities in the first place.
Well it’s not like Tirek was cleaning up after himself.
“might have insisted on going after him alone” now who’s the one assuming things?
and as far as Discord being the fated way to find tirek, I find it a little too convenient of how now he has this magical disturbance detection ability for the sake of the plot
Was Tirek actually leaving a trail of bodies behind? From what we saw, he was picking off ponies that were by themselves. It’s possible that he was actually leaving town after each victim, although that’s admittedly unlikely. Even if Tirek was people quickly, that still would have required letting him attack ponies to determine his location
Still, if Celestia wanted Tirek found as fast as possible, Discord was the correct choice. Unfortunately, she trusted him to deal with Tirek himself, although Discord might have insisted on going after him alone, and Celestia didn’t have anyway to stop him in that situation.
Frankly, given Tirek’s past, not expecting him to try to team up was reasonable. As was not expecting Discord to take him up on that offer, as Discord could get a proper rampage going without dragging deadweight there along.
Scorpan’s absence could have been excused in a number of ways, but it wasn’t. The lack of any explanation for his absence is actually what draws attention to it.
Would have been interesting to find out, for example, if Scorpan actually had the same ability as Tirek. And since Tirek seems to be immortal, there’s the question of why Scorpan left the little ponies that he befriended.
Manhunt shmanhunt, all you have to do is follow the trail of powerless ponies, seeing as how somebody should’ve noticed the trail of bodies by the time Discord actually showed up.
(yea Nuclear Missile who isn’t 100% trustworthy, at all, really suck to see my waifu being written as dumb all the time >_<)
as to where Scorpan is, I dunno, in an original script I imagine he might’ve been the one they original call to help with the situation, but like I said, they have to shoe horn in discord.
She tried to swat a mosquito with a fly
Dangit, I meant to say nuclear missile, not a fly.
And, of course, there’s the question of where Tirek was in all this.
Scorpan, where was Scorpan.
Wow, I am bad with typos today.
Enh….
Celestia actually had a reason to send Discord, as he was the only person capable of tracking Tirek. Discord was able to find Tirek faster than a conventional manhunt, without risking any of Celestia’s little ponies.
If anything, I’d say that the problem was actually Celestia overreacting. She tried to swat a mosquito with a fly, although she was probably expecting things to go wrong in a different direction.
Magic I think for unicorn is like a type of “muscle” and that if you don’t end up using it a lot it’s not gonna be as power as other unicorn;s magic, hence why I said he started with “weaker” unicorns ones who don’t practice magic as regular and basically use it for telekinesis.
My point still stands then if this still could’ve been easily resolved if they’d acted early enough with a power Tirek wasn’t powerful enough to absorb, that wasn’t discord.
Actually, I think that even the first unicorn he drained had more power than he did at the moment.
It would be more accurate to say that stronger characters were shown to be able to defend themselves, rather than calling them immune to it.
Discord dodged Tirek’s magic drain, after all, rather than simply shrugging it off.
More compelling is that Tirek had to start with unicorns, before going to the other two pony types, so he might not have been able to drain the powers of winged unicorns until he was able to drain earth ponies. But even that idea is still just a theory, since we don’t know if he had to work his way up to draining earth ponies or not.
It’s equally possible, if not moreso, that unicorns have more magic on average than the other two races. Alternatively, as we saw him catch a (relatively weak) magic attack, that he considered them the easiest to defend against.
That said, using a conventional manhunt before sending someone as capricious as Discord should have been considered. Tirek was hiding himself away from civilian ponies at first, so simply sending the guard after him might have worked, never mind having Luna and Celestia go out themselves.
And, of course, there’s the question of where Tirek was in all this. Why didn’t they consider sending to him for help?
Um no cause that was basically the way Tirek was presented, hence not being able to absorb Discord’s power until after he’s sucked up the rest of Equestria’s powers that were able to feed him enough to be on par and then stronger then discord.
I think you meant to say assume. cause that is a bit of an assumption.
it makes even less sense when you realise that Tirek was only able to absorb power even to or lesser then himself. Hence why he was hiding in the start feeding on weaker Unicorns, and if the Princesses had out right delt with him at the start, he wouldn’t have been able to feed on their power.
But nope, we had to shoe horn in Discord into the plot cause the writers wrote themselves into a corner by bringing him back into the show in the first place.
I’m sorry.
Okay, they can’t fight back against Tirek while Discord is on his said. Okay.
That still doesn’t explain why they all stayed in Canterlot instead of going into hiding in different locations, which would have at least bought Twilight more time while Tirek went after all three of them.
