Ah yes, because the only problem we had with Equestria girls was the way the mane 6 looked. Yep. No other issues. Everything else was perfect.

Well I was skeptical of and was left unimpressed by EG and barely care about SA.

I see… Admittedly, I do get tired of the “something that happens in fanon is awesome, but then when something happens similar in canon, then it’s bad” fan-mentality.
 
I remember I got hassled, and insulted by a Sonic-fan on DA for liking the official Sonic comics, and he remarked how angry he was at the writer for having Sally Acorn, one of the main characters get roboticized. (Turned into a robot. I must add it was only temporary, yet he acted like she was going to stay that way forever…)  
Yet, I looked in his DA favorites folder, and it was FULL of fanart by many different artists of Sally, and other Sonic characters, even OCs, being roboticized, and such…  
Explain that to me?

You missed on big point, one if official the other is fan made, more will ignore the fan made one if they don’t like it.

To expand on my opinion. With the EQG designs I get a sense of who the character is atleast. The Starswirl ones all just look like generic anime girl number five fricken billion.
 
Also EQG had Sunset Satan and adorable doggy spike, and some amusing gags.
 
Starswirl Academy so far looks like your typical highschool anime thing.

OP here to note that the comparison is meant to criticize fan reaction and fan reaction alone. And yes, I’m defending EqG.

“Anthro” to me, is more like a pony-head on a human body, (enter the “anthro” tag in the search bar above to see what I’m talking about) so they don’t really seem that “anthro” to me. Just humanized, with their pony colors as their skin tone. (Which I think is a better idea then using natural skin-tones. Fans tend to argue over “what color” characters should be in fanart, and such… Some get angry, if you make them a certain race, or all-white, or if you do something like make Pinkie a chubby girl.)
 
Also, I don’t see anything wrong with E.G.‘s humanized characters looking cartoonier, and having eyes, and such similar to their pony versions. I think that stays true to the show’s original art style. So at least it has some unique things about it.
 
Nothing against anime’, but I don’t think that “Starswirl Academy”‘s style is that much superior honestly, and if they did E.G. like that, fans would complain it’s to “animu,” and such…

Even if they did make E.G. all anime’ like, or however “fans” claim they would’ve wanted it, I’m sure it would’ve gotten hated by some regardless how it’s handled.
 
It’s not the best movie in the world, but I still enjoyed it. Just felt like a longer episode of MLP:FiM to me, which is fine in my books. Plus it was nice to see even though she’s a princess/alicorn now, that Twilight is still just as clumsy/awkward/adorkable as she always was. (But of course, “Twilicorn” is a whole different controversial subject with fans. Let’s not bring that up here…)

At least EQG made an effort to give Rarity and Pinkie their proper hairstyles.

I think a little of both but he does make a good point. Fans did bash on E.G. and I’ve seen thumbs up for a harem game so it looks like defending. But E.G. was meh so it could be either.

Yes, let’s just ignore the surface themes and call both of these exactly the same, despite the different mediums, designs, creators, etc.

The problem EG had with design is..
 
That’s not humanization, its human/anthro hybriding in a way you just don’t do. And then calling it human.
 
Starswirl Academy did it right, because.. oh look, actual skin colors humans have had. Oh look, the faces don’t look half-pony. The freaking manestyles were adapted to look like actual hair.
 
Of course this comparison goes out the window when you delve beyond appearance. As, I’ve yet to try Starswirl Academy.

To be honest. I find the design of EQG far more appealing than generic anime girl style.
 

People are more likely to ignore fanworks they don’t like.
 
EqG is the powers behind the show itself says this is a good idea.
