I hate both.
EQG for just looking stupid (stupid proportions, stupid skin color), and SA for failing to capture the essence of the original characters.
On the one hand, you have the fans, who create content for the love of the show. On the other hand, you have Hasbro, who thought they’d cash in on what the fans were doing.
Interestingly enough, Semehammer is actually an artist for this game. Funny, that.
To be fair on this, EQG pushes more of the idea of Bratz, Monster high, and such ‘highschool’ drama shows, were it becomes far more about the high school and the cheep fling with Brad, until Cindy realizes he’s cheating on her, breaks up with him and goes to Fred instead. Meanwhile we have constant jokes on how homework sucks, tests suck, etc. The show would normally begin to focus around this aspect, and lose the adventure.
On the other hoof, we have the more anime style. One thing about highschool animes, is they often leave the highschool very quickly and move towards adventure. Not all of them, but more of them do than that of the ‘Bratz’ style shows.
MLP itself isn’t about living in ponyville. Its about the adventure. See how we’re moving away from ponyville. The shows moving further away from slice of life, and delving deeper into the adventure. Which is why having a spinoff thing appear and throw us right back into slice of life.. well isn’t nice. And it might even become much more painful slice of life.
Outta the hair colors and the names SA barely reminds you of the show where it is from.
Not to mention it’s your everyday VN where you woo a girl and get laid/hook up.

I will agree, the designs of Celestia and Luna in EqG are absolutely awful, though they have nothing to do with the point made in the macro.
Has someone just completely missed any and all debate about the drawbacks and benefits of school uniforms? It sure seems that way.
In EqG, the characters are wearing clothes that they choose, which is an expression of their character and personality. (especially for teenagers.)
In Starswirl Academy, they are wearing school uniforms, which are only an expression of what the school board decided to regulate, and has no bearing whatsoever on the characters themselves.
I like the top designs better. The bottom looks like generic anime style. I do like the movie’s designs and when they’re given normal body color it looks bland and weird. You still have kids with two tone hair, weird eye color and names like fluttershy. Plus you avoid inane rambling over the ethnicity of a cartoon horse.
I don’t like the EqG design at all. They look like deformed barbiedolls, their eyes are to big and their arms to thin, the fact that they all wear boots to look sorta like hooves is also a weird design choice.
Can’t say I like the animedesign much better though
