And that bit on Ember choosing her was botched up with she FORCED Smolder to go, as in Smolder only changed due to forced exposure.
Which is not painting the dragons(or Ember herself) in a good way since it comes off as dragons are so bad they need someone to force them to change.

Now you get it. Ember allegedly picks Smolder BECAUSE she’s the most viable dragon to learn the lesson of friendship other than herself. That means Smolder SHOULD be much more willing and interested in acts of kindness, but the writers didn’t do that, they did “Oh yeah, dragons are jerks, lmao”.
This is why Smolder only feels well written when she’s with the Student 6 as Gallus gives it back to her and there is more of a friendly banter aspect instead of one party being crass, abrasive, and unkind to someone who is trying their hardest to be nice and considerate.

And Ember could. She could dial it down. She was his friend and learned the value of it, but she wasn’t allowed by anyone on the writing staff to actually make anything of that friendship with Spike.
They instead stuck Smolder in who is abrasive, bratty, and is just every flavor of cruel to Spike for no reason.

Smolder’s initial full interactions with him are during Molt Down. She locks him in a closet with herself, tells him his smell will make everyone around him abandon him and hate him and he’ll be chased by predators and then she takes joy in how he’s panicking. That’s it. She doesn’t tell him it’s temporary, doesn’t tell him it results in wings growing, she withholds ALL the positive aspects of it for no other reason than to be cruel to him.
The next time is in that complete garbage episode “Father knows Beast” where the entire mane6 + starlight let their brains fall out. Spike makes a pillow specifically for Smolder as a thank you. Smolder rejects it telling him that dragons “don’t use pillows”, despite one of the dragons in Gauntlet of Fire explicitly stating that they would raid pony cities to steal their pillows, and Smolder HERSELF happily using pillows ALL THE TIME when she’s with the Student 6. So she just flat out lies to him just to be mean to him.
Nothing Smolder does with Spike is positive.

WTF, When was Smolder unfriendly to Spike? Most of the times Spike interacts with her they tend to be quite friendly, with regards to Thorax and Ember it is pretty safe to say that Spike did interact with Thorax other times but off screen (unfortunately) why do you think she considers him her best friend? with Ember it is true but in School Daze they spend quality time together.

Adding to it, Spike NEVER gets to spend time with Ember or Thorax after this episode.
He’s NOT invited over in regards to helping with Pharynx and the changelings as a whole just stop really even being a presence after that episode.
Spike is prevented from virtually any Ember interactions with the introduction of Smolder, who isn’t friendly, isn’t kind to Spike, and only really serves to give exposition in a half-hearted way in regards to “some” dragon stuff and take pleasure in lying to Spike and seeing him panic.
Spike loses both of his self-made friendships in this episode because he follows what TWILIGHT TELLS HIM TO DO.

So I wasn’t misremembering things,Twilight and Starlight did eff Spike over.
Whats also ironic is how Ember acted in School Daze(regarding the Student Six being “missing”) sort of proved Spike’s point too on his worries.
Damn girl went out of claw with threatening with war.

Well, the worry was that their differing personalities would clash. Couple that with them being political leaders of different lands and Twilight’s panicky imagination extrapolated that it might lead to a war.
Fortunately it all worked out and Embrax became my OTP :P
