So, the Ninja turtles are Ninja Tortoises according to USA biology term??
No. They are, in the original comic, said to be red eared sliders (though their visual depiction doesn’t really reflect that), a pond turtle and very common petshop species.
Their appearance usually suggests a wood turtle, which lives primarily in streams. The wood turtle is native to the US Northeast, and could easily wind up in the New York sewer system.

Depends on where you’re from.
  • In the US, turtle refers to any member of the group, while tortoise refers to exclusively terrestrial species.
  • In Britain, turtles are sea creatures, tortoises are land creatures, and terrapins are freshwater creatures.
  • In Australia, turtles are sea creatures, and tortoises are land or freshwater creatures (but turtle is becoming a more generic term).
