So I started reading through the Redwall books again and I couldn’t help but wonder how Fluttershy would react to the story. What with it being about furry little woodland creatures engaging in epic battles and all. I imagine she would be both intrigued and slightly horrified. She probably shouldn’t read that before bed though.
I probably could have done better if I had taken more time on it, but I started it about a week before my mom’s birthday as a present for her.

The Fluffiest
@Khelben Arunsun
“Some said he was a Portugese rat” doesn’t mean he had to have the accent, especially when literally every character he ever wrote has had their accent legibly written into the dialogue. I guess that’s why it throws me off so badly. I also didn’t expect the Sommerset moles to be so gravely; I always read it more as a drawl than a growl.

And yeah, the original is an odd duck, with it’s vague implications of being more in the vein of Rescuers/American Tail/etc with its Small Mice in Big Human World sprinkled here and there with the town dog and the horse cart, along with other weirdness like the nameless beaver, goat milk with no goats, and naming the Sword of Martin “Ratdeath” like it was LOTR. (which thankfully was dropped immediately because that’s an awful name.) It’s mostly because it was a reworked version of the story he used to tell to his kids, I believe to be eligible for a children’s novel contest? (Or am I mixing it up with Over Sea Under Stone?) It’s entrancing writing structure is pretty much the only reason why it’s exceptional compared to the series average, but all those things are reasons why I don’t like it as much as I could.

And yeah, it has to be four syllables, not only because they show you in, what is it, Long Patrol, I think, how to syllabize it, but also because it’s basically just an anagram (Jaques loves him some anagrams) of Alleluia. (just missing the double L)

I don’t own the ephemera, but I do have all 23 books. Before my workplace got more lax about using your phone on your break, I just kept reading through the series over and over again, in in-universe chronological order as best as I can figure it. The wiki list more or less works, with the main sticking points being things like how, disappointingly, the attic library in High Rhulain stops existing somehow, unless you try to shift it towards the end of the series, which is hard to justify when you have descendants of the wildcats, descendants of characters who were alive back in Salamandastron, and so on. I want them all to fit neatly together, especially when you have a nice, solid, established, recurring, self-referential mythology stretching from Brocktree (both contents at one end AND framing device at the other!) all the way through Taggerung.

My favorite book series! Eulalia! :D

But I can see why Fluttershy is a bit upset… no spoilers.

Also I love everything Redwall related, I even have the figurines/statues. (From a personal friend of Julie London; $250 was a bargain in my mind!)

Although Orlando’s voice actor in the T.V. show kept mispronouncing eulalia as YOU-lia rather than you-LAY-lia.

Well, in the original, Cluny is mentioned as being Portuguese. (Yes, I know what you’re thinking, but Mr. Jacques retconned the setting quite a bit after the first couple of books.)
