I wonder if the mirror shows “a younger version of yourself” (with the exact same hairstyle, not a “memory” of how you looked like years ago); or if it is even more specific like: “a little filly version of yourself” (even for stallions or non-ponies), or a more abstract take like: “yourself, but as how you feel in this moment” (in Misty´s case: she is terrified & alone, like when she was a little filly).
-> It is obviously a magic mirror, otherwise Shadow!Misty would not had being able to “get out” of the Plane of Dreams.

I like to imagine that Hall of Mirrors is actually haunted

yeah, but I think this is much better than opaline arcana. Misty Brightdawn is afraid of the evil version of herself. it’s like shadow misty was always a part of Misty Brightdawn just like midnight sparkle was always a part of sci twi. it strikes a pretty good resemblance to the 2016 equestria girls movie legend of everfree.
