Barb isn’t just a nickname. It’s a name in the same manner as Babs and Barbie.
 
They’re all shortened or diminutive versions of Barbara, but that doesn’t mean that they’re all short for Barbara.

Yes, but Spike isn’t a diminutive form of anything.
 
What I’m saying is that Barb is a name that can stand on its own; a character doesn’t have to be named Barbara in order to be called Barb.

I honestly hate when Spike’s gender-swapped counterpart is called Barbara, because there’s no need for it. Barb is a shortened form of Barbara, but it’s actually a valid name on its own.
