Description
Most people are aware of this but for those who don’t, as mentioned by the title Discovery Family still owns part of the rights to My Little Pony Friendship is Magic and all of its characters. Therefore explaining why we don’t have any references to G4 outside of small nods and cameos.
yes, but the series has been planned since 2019
As I recall, the show was green lit the same time the movie was moved to netflix during covid.
I’m actually baffled at the Netflix exclusiveness agreement. Netflix was suffering quite a lowering interest in recent times overall.
Regarding Discovery, all we know is that G4 has a distribution share with Discovery, so is still partially up to Discovery to accept G5 to connect with G4 or not. Personally I don’t care anymore, but if it happens it’ll probably involve lots of private talks between those companies.
but Hasbro has already said that Netflix’s exclusivity agreement ends in 2024, so they probably have already resolved this with Discovery so that future G5 productions can reference G4 more easily
Discovery handles distribution rights for G4, not G5. This means if G5 wants to make G4 references they need to ask for permission to Discovery and Hasbro. Regardless of what Hasbro wants Discovery must also be on board, fee or not fee.
Edited
Apparently they assumed with the increase of digital streaming like Netflix around 2014 they thought they’d need support from a bigger friend.
Yea. Like the together trees used to be called harmony trees. Tbh I like the new name better bc it is an evolved new thing
Technically speaking you are right.
If I have to guess, the most generous theory I could think about is that they didn’t know the property was gonna stay with Discovery until it was too late.
Is not hard to believe since IDW and DHX often had hiccups regarding the comic’s continuities. Equestria Girls only managed to remain somewhat in line because the heads of EG were pretty much the same from the canon show.
It’s worse when you consider that the rights owner is Warner Bros Discovery, headed by one David Zaslav. Even worse, he wants to buy out Paramount, who has the movie rights to the Transformers and GI Joe.
Always read the fine print. Nintendo did it before the deal with Sony with the CD player…for all the good it did to them anyway.
