I personally don’t think genes for color mix like that. if that were true, there’d be ugly clay colored ponies all over the place presently.
 
I think a foal’s color can go up or down, left or right, on a color graph, with their parents providing a combo, or they can be a lighter or darker shade, or the can go left or right, like orange falling into yellow or red, like the apples.
 
Blue mixes with red to make purple. which means Twilight’s grandparents had some red on them.
