I really like this episode a lot (apart from Sprout’s debut), as one comment says, it’s a metaphor for emotions. The more you bottle up your emotions, the more they get out of control, so you have to release them to manage them, whether it’s a good thing or a bad thing.

Oh, a metaphor for emotions. All the better to control what you do with them rather than repress them. (I don’t know if thats really the intentions, but that’s the great thing about fiction. You can interpret it.)

No context but all earth ponies put that on themselves because they were not allowed to use their magic. It was causing too much chaos until they changed their mind and thought controlling the magic was better than not using it.
