Do you want to move so far away from home that you could brag about it to your ex-best friends, and not get stuck in a middle of a three/four-way intersection in the middle of nowhere?!

still just phones
“Cell phones” were replaced by “smart phones” over 5 years ago.
“In terms of social media”? Well LinkedIn has been around for 20+ years, so by your standards Instagram is still a whiny teenager.
I agree. You can write about contemporary things without them aging poorly, but its impossible to claim how they will age without distance.
Sure that could be done, though I’d argue G4 for example had episodes with similar themes without direct references to modern day technology for the most part. By giving the ponies 2020-era smartphones and having them use applications or whatever visuals are similar to things we know about now it’s really just pandering to me, I don’t think there’s anything profound going on there other than “lol target demographic will think this is so relatable”.

I can kinda see what you’re saying. If MLP made jokes about Among Us or something vapid like that, it would feel really dated. But, at the same time, I don’t think it’s impossible to write about social media in a way that would rise above that. There’s a lot that could be said about influencers, chasing internet upvotes, the misleadingly-perfect depictions of people’s lives, angry people just wanting to be angry, misinformation, etc. No clue if the writers will rise to the occasion, but it doesn’t seem impossible. The key is that they have to understand the internet and say something meaningful about it, rather than just vaguely reference things to try and look cool.
Edited because: That wasn't quite the right word.
(laughs in The Mitchells VS. The Machines)
Yeah, sure. That’s why Stranger Things was such a flop.
<rolls eyes>
That is a very long time, my friend. FiM came out literally 12 years ago, meaning that Instagram is likewise also over 10 years old. In terms of social media, that is a very long time to be in existence (only a few sites, notably Instagram owner Facebook and Twitter, have been around for longer).

I don’t care what you say. I will always love G5 and the characters in it despite things like this. Truth be told, I have no interest in the likes of modern-day social media, and I can see what you mean by something like this dating a show. What you ignore is the fact that it isn’t the central focus. Then again, I think you are way too eager to hate on G5 for not being G4 to truly appreciate the benefits of the series or the characters in it. For that reason, I will choose to ignore all future comments you make, Lemon Drop. After all, I could care less about a person being overly negative about G5.
If you make media to only pander to a current popular thing then your media is not going to be good or remembered fondly by people later on. Plus from a financial perspective it’d make them more money in the long run if they made something actually good, tis why Disney can still sell their decades-old movies without an issue.
Not really but because other technology replace them.
A cell phone has never been replaced but upgraded
Do people still use pagers, boomboxes and voice recorders?
Uhhhhhhh… Instagram literally launched days before FIM started airing. If thats “been around for ages” for you, you might want to check your derpibooru filter.
(laughs in Equestria Girls)
Who cares if it ages poorly? This isn’t meant for future generations, it is meant for the current generation. And, truth be told, this is very much what the current generation is interested in (just look at the continued popularity of sites like TikTok and Snapchat, for instance, along with Instagram, which has been around for ages). Sure, people will be interested in different things in the future, but for now it does fit in with current trends quite well.
Videos have been a thing for the past 100 years, the format it’s done in though is what will age poorly.
