From an evolutionary perspective, this is completely plausible. Dragons develop wings; developing wings earlier wouldn’t take huge changes. It may even be a single mutation.
For all we know it may have occurred even in the G4 era with some dragons having wings upon hatching and others developing them during the molt, depending on the gene they carried.

You’re mostly gonna see that in the comics, seeing how they’re going to revisit G4 stuff. It seems like in the show’s canon, dragons are a dying species because as mentioned, never been seen more many generations. So they may be a dying species in the brink of extinction.

I still think that everything Post-2017 Movie was a terrible direction for the show to go in. Instead of focusing on Little Miss Schoolhouse for one season only to quickly abandon it for Celestia and Luna abdicating the throne to an incompetent Princess, we should have had Season 8 revolve around the aftermath of the movies’ events and take the show down a darker path by showing that Equestria’s ran out of both respect and patience for Twilight in-light of her essentially leaving them for dead multiple times across the series, with the latest three-day invasion by The Storm King serving as their final straw…

It is set in the same universe whether you like it or not. I wonder how dragons are born with wings now. Because you know… it has been such a little gap between G4 and G5 it is not like the dragons could have evolved to be born with wings. You know the same team that remembered that the fucking pegasi needed magic to fly. But no, they sure don’t care about continuity. That ‘synopsis’ for the special even shows how much they care about continuity. But you are right. It is a reboot. This is a different land. It is totally not Equestria set in the future.
Or, hear me out….
Alternate Universe Equestria. Where somehow or another, Twilight Sparkle & Co. mess up, and the bad guys win in “The Ending of the End.”
