Normally, humans turned pony came from the past. This is refreshing, at least.

The portal is a STARGATE that de-materialize a traveler before sending it throught the “magenta swirling” conduit.
This means they “do not exist” for a small ammount of time on either world (as their mass/energy+data is going through); then saying that they “come from the past” is [Technically Speaking] CORRECT, even if it is just a few seconds.

(In the first Equestria Girls Movie [“Through the Mirror”]) -> There is circumstantial evidence pointing that the suns of the “Earth” of C.H.S. & the “planet” of Equestria are in visible range to each others [since the portal shutdowns just after a particular bright star was eclipsed by the Moon].
This would imply that both are in the Milky Way Galaxy (in fact, not more than a few hundred light_years appart, given that both suns are dwarf yellow G_type stars); also living simultaneously in the same “present” (ignoring the relativistic frame delay).
