…then again, the comic writers decided to expand his character by giving him a personable background story independent of the show writers, who, at that point, decided to leave Sombra’s fate undecided/deceased/abandoned character entirely.

To be fair, he was never supposed to be more than that. It was fan demand that made them re introduce him.
That’s not a fleshed out character then.
Only because Hasbro never put an effort to give King Sombra more background far than the fact he was a wicked unicorn who cast a curse upon the Crystal Empire.
…in the show he is… well… what even is he? Nothing
That only happened in the comic book. I’m glad the real Sombra never got reformed.
I’m not sure how you got that from this image, but ok. Anyway, yes, she did that because the Umbrum posed as loving creatures. And Sombra isn’t “corrupted”. He still has his regular conciousness. He’s still himself, right?
She assembled a group of renegades characters (Queen Chrysalis, Iron Will, the Flim Flam Brothers & Lightning Dust) to launch an assault over the Crystal Empire - putting at risk the lifes of many civilians - in “hopes” of bringing back Sombra without knowing how corrupted he was then thanks to the Umbras.
