It’s not really a ‘fad?’ It originated from a pair of asks that Lauren Faust got. One revealed that Trixie’s character was initially a stallion, while she admits in a second, unrelated answer that a pony in season 1 is trans. The fandom put these two together and now Trixie is trans.
