Maybe Spike should have redeemed Chrysalis instead..
Spike redeeming Thorax had no payoff for Spike. All Spike got for doing that was being harassed in triple threat by thorax and ember because he followed the plan that Twilight and starlight came up with and encouraged and later scolded him for doing.
Reminder that after triple threat, Spike never sees thorax or ember again outside of a professional “hi” in passing and ends the series with no friends he made under his own power.
