I certainly think so. Lauren Faust was let go after the second season, the series ends with Twilight “graduating” from her friendship studies, as it were, and things carry on. Plus, it’s a short season because Hasbro hadn’t heard the term “brony” when they set the budget for the show months before. It sure feels like it should have been.
 
Someone should corner a producer or director at a con and ask.

It’s pretty clear that the episode was written the way it could go either way. The show could very well end there with “no loose ends left” Twilight as a alicorn. Everything tied to a neat storyline bow. But it was also left open enough that they could go on with the story should it come to it (aside from the obvious problem that needs some writing around).

That’s actually what I thought. Maybe they originally intended to go with the 65 episodes as some suspected, but when they saw how popular it was, they decided to extend it.

I miss the show so much
On a second thought, maybe this is true. The episodes are written well over a year before they air. I remember reading they were pitching S3 in mid-2011, just around the time when the fandom was only starting to grow. Maybe they really did plan FiM to be 3 seasons long, but they didn’t account for the fandom.

My thoughts exactly. Meaning either they now have to retool to the show almost completely to keep Alicorn Twilight from being a total wallbanger, or they run with the same formula and jump the shark.
 
The Alicornization itself hasn’t changed my opinion of the show, but what they do with it certainly will.

Or it was planned to be something else, but then Hasbro said “no no, season 3 will have only 13 episodes” and they had to rewrite a bunch of stuff. They needed a new season ender.
