I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again it would be easier to make a list of the art styles or animation methods that gumball doesn’t use. That show must have been a nightmare to animate
Not to mention, Lauren Faust WAS from CalArts, so it’s really hilariously ironic for bronies to regurgitate anti-CalArts sentiments.
Caling it “CalArts” is very ignorant, as all those shows are made by people whom didn’t attend CalArts, and people act like it’s a new trend in animation, but the “big head style” has been around sense the 1960s with Hanna Barbara, or even the 1930s when you look at Mockey, Bosco, and such. They even had those “straight line teeth” too.
@northern haste
In fact, many got angry over including “Gravity Falls” there, because frankly it has very good animation. Not to mention, Gumball isn’t even one style.
@BleedingRaindrops
That’s an unfair assertion, because even “simple” styles take effort to animate, and frankly PL is still pretty smoothly animated, and they have to redraw the facial expressions, and such.
And y’know FIM, reuses the same pony body model for almost every pony too, which is kinda “cheap” too when you think about it, so it’s not like FIM is perfect either. In fact, many G1 fans hated the FIM/G4 style when they first saw it. (I didn’t even like it at first and it grew on me.)
That’s not even what those shows look like
Well, it’s the same studio and animation software from Rainbow Roadtrip and G5. So, get used to it! It won’t be the same style as Pony Life, but it will use the same animation techniques.
Pretty sure some (not all) of those series were created by people who didn’t attend CalArts. Rebecca Sugar didn’t, I think she attended an art institute in New York or something like that.
Same goes for the “IT’S TTG!” accusations.
Heck, TTG wasn’t even that cartoony, and more sitcom-ish. Not to mention TVPG edgy, while PL is not. Unlike most making those comparisons, I’ve actually seen TTG.

The overused CalArts strawman has really been beaten to the ground at this point.
yes
You mean it like that?
And yeah, he was more partial to old thick line animation then Disney.
And that’s not even the art style he was talking about. You was talking about Disney including the Renaissance Disney
“You’re into… that?”
Sadly, alot of people here do regurgitate that “CalArts” insult alot here in order to demonize PL.
It’s like this site has been taken over by John K.
First, I think no one in the staff actually attended CalArts (the animation is done at Ireland). Second, Lauren Faust was a student there! So no MLP can criticize a series’ style for supposedly looking like CalArts… Well, they actually can, if they want to come across as a huge idiot.
Lauren Faust is a CalArts student actually, and the so-called “CalArts” style existed for decades, and didn’t even orginate from there.
Heck, the Mario Bros. had lined teeth, and round mouths/heads in the original 1983 “Mario Brothers” arcade game, and it’d look silly if that was called “CalArts.”
