I like to think that this has some bearing on the one and only time the word was used in the show. An artifact of great power and evil consequences found in a dimly lit shop of mysteries really needs to have been created by a grim and unspeakable process.
The fact that the incorrect derivation emerges from a false friend is somewhat ironic.
“Alicorn” traditionally had nothing to do with wings and referred to the material a unicorn’s horn was made of. It wasn’t until the late 20th century that some fantasy writers started using it to refer to a winged unicorn, possibly due to its similarity to the French (aile) and/or Latin (ala) words for “wing”.
Actually, it’s from the French “aile”.
