by the caurentena with a voucher (badly done voucher that caused people to crowd) that does not reach people who no longer have money (there are people who have managed to survive small arms to generate income or others informally and others behind closed doors and others were shot their savings) who marches on foot to return to their provinces to spread more people
(hospitals and jails are terrible)
greetings from an infected post from an interesting country Peru
If the concept of “the word ‘analogy’ does not mean ‘exactly the same right down to the serial numbers’” confuses you, look up some real world statistics related to lockdowns; Sweden never had anything more than voluntary social distancing measures, with no solid guidance from the government… and it has a quantified COVID-19 death rate higher than Spain, and four or five times higher than its neighbors. The actual death rate is in fact far higher even than that, because their cavalier laissez-faire “response” means that almost no testing at all has been done compared to other nations in northern Europe, so the pool of people who’ve been tested in the first place isn’t including the vast majority of deaths attributable to the virus. Germany and the PRC both eased restrictions after prolonged drops in the number of new cases, and both immediately– within a day or two– saw spikes in infection rates. Mandatory shutdowns and enforcement of social distancing work, this is not subject to rational debate.
It’s super great that you, personally, are taking precautions. How many shops and restaurants do you think are still going to be open, exactly, when everyone who isn’t taking those precautions is sick or dead? The people getting hardest hit by this outside health care personnel are the service industry workers who are considered
essentialevery day except payday, and so far the general public’s collective response to those workers literally risking their lives for literally starvation wages has beenthoughts and prayersclapping out of windows and making inspirational posts on social media instead of demanding a living wage or universal health care or really any kind of social safety net whatsoever, or even expansion of those benefits in grownup countries which already have them. Who do you think is going to cook your fast food or do your hair or collect your garbage when everything opens back up and the people whose jobs those were are all dead from lack of ability to take any reasonable precautions or afford any health care? That is far from a ‘very appropriate analogy’… Cutting your parachute too early will result in death or gross bodily harm 100% of the time, not 30% of the time (per the pandemic’s worst projections) and flapping (washing) your arms a lot might actually help you in the virus’ case.
That and there are consequences to prolonged shutdowns, not so much for keeping your parachute open and coasting. (Pedantic) I mean, you could drift off-course to an unsafe landing area if the parachute was opened too soon, but an early quarantine would’ve nipped the initial spread in the bud, so the analogy doesn’t hold there either.(/Pedantic)
Ultimately, what is the objective?
Some of my RL friends act like they want to wait out the virus entirely; like any chance of the spread causing people to die or survive with damaged organs is unreasonable. It’s moral, but oversimplified. There won’t be a vaccine developed for several more months. Even if the vaccine has absolutely no adverse effects after a rushed development, there will still be costs attached to waiting for it. Things aren’t as simple as not collecting rents, mortgages, and taxes for six months. Someone will be left holding the bag.
EDIT to head off Ad Hominems from the last paragraph: Yes, spread is bad. I do what I can to mitigate it on my end by disinfecting shoes, washing hands, being mindful of what I touch, and judiciously using my masks. I glove and mask up at work out of necessity anyway. I still have hand sanitizer. I also have close family who would be especially vulnerable to this virus. Just because I want some things reopened doesn’t mean I’m going to ignore the continuing threat.
Edited because: Heading off Ad Hominems
Really makes me think.
Spoiler: I’m from Thailand.
Well, if your country is half agriculture, half manufacture, then you are fine, else, you are screwed.
Agriculture produces food, my country is based on this.
There is no point in continuing social distancing when the hospitals are no longer overwhelmed
The attitude you’re blindly parroting here is literally going to get a lot of people killed, dude. This is not ~~an opinion~~, you can look up historical precedent.
2 suitable distance
3 do not touch the face
long-term quarantines don’t solve anything
in my country they are starving
because of a populist and a group of progressive sosialistas reds or whatever they are currently called

For one thing, sources or you’re a liar. For another, I echo TexasUberAlles’ question. Do you have a single argument to make that isn’t based on whataboutism? No, I won’t ignore your sources. I’ll look them up and deduce myself if they’re true, which is easy. If you don’t give anything and say “Well you won’t listen” then I’ll just assume that you’re lying and thus won’t listen to a thing you say.
What you’re talking about is a classic case of making an omelette without breaking any eggs. The people protesting demanding that states reopen and everyone going back to work right now are the same people who lost their fool minds and called Barack Obama a traitor and secretly a terrorist because he liked mustard on his burger. The only possible way we can safely end social distancing and do infection prevention here in the U.S. is for mass-testing that would dwarf what they did in South Korea. And maybe you haven’t noticed, but thanks largely to the political party of science-denying morons whom we call the GOP the American healthcare system is hopelessly, hilariously , incapable of performing such a feat.
Just stopping social distancing and going back to business as usual would be nothing short of a catastrophe. Within months if not weeks, we’d be right back to square one only worse. As for the people running out of money, I feel for them. I was homeless at one point in my life and I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. You want that to change, vote the GOP out and vote in people who will make sure the money goes to the people during a time like this instead of billionaires who already have more money than they could spend in a dozen lifetimes. See, the businesses you mentioned were still open because you can safely practice social distancing and staying away from each other. A hair salon? Show me a barber or a stylist that has six-foot arms and then we’ll talk. A construction worker may have less contact with people than a grocery store clerk, but unlike a grocery store clerk construction workers travel all over the place. If a carpenter is infected they could spread it all over the state. I could go on, but I think you get the point.
Trump, the GOP, right-wing pundits and everyone else can fume all they want, but the United States as a whole is in no position to go back to business as usual. If the people screaming loudest the the economy to reopen get their way, they’ll only ensure that it stays closed. All the while infecting and killing tens of thousands more Americans.

Sorry I mean continue social distancing they way that was. Why can’t people go back to work and follow the same social distancing a grocery clerk does? I mean hell a construction worker has less contact with people than a person standing in a busy grocery store.
Why should a person present data when another will instantly refute (without even bothering to look at it), it with “I disagree with your statement.”? The whole point of social distancing was to slow the spread of infection so as to not overwhelm the hospital system. We have done that (and there is data for it). Now its shifted into infection prevention period. There is no point in continuing social distancing when the hospitals are no longer overwhelmed (they never where), and we now know what to do when going back to work. How come a clerk at grocery stores, beer distributors, abortion clinics, mining, marijuana businesses, post offices, delivery, trash collection, hunting and fishing, sporting goods, bicycling shops, auto repair stores, concrete manufacturing etc… the lists go on and on, but a restaurant cannot? A goddamn dentist office cannot? A hair salon cannot? If a grocery store clerk can wear a mask and social distance (which they do not!), then other businesses can to. People know how to be responsible (for the most part). You know why people protest? Because they are out of money! They need food for their families. Granted there is a lot of those who protest for stupid reasons. Those protesting political statements or bringing guns to a peaceful protest are truly disgusting. I’d like to see what happens to you people when they money runs dry and the refrigerator is empty. When you get thrown from your home because you can’t pay the rent. When inflation gets so huge because they keep printing money that your life savings becomes non-existent or your money no longer holds value (I hope you people are investing in gold).

There’s only one sentence in his remark that would have data to back it up, “…one of the only public health measures which has been historically and quantifiably proven to interrupt the spread of a pandemic-level pathogen through a population.”
The rest is opinion and hyperbole.
I’ma second the “you got nothing”.
In other words, you got nothing.
I would comment and show you actual evidence and data proving what you said is false, but you don’t care about that now do you? All about emotion and virtue signaling. Give me a break. Back to the horse issues please.
@OneAmongOthers
It’s hard to imagine many things more childish than belligerently congregating to protest one of the only public health measures which has been historically and quantifiably proven to interrupt the spread of a pandemic-level pathogen through a population. There comes a point where Actual Grownups have to accept that sometimes other people are in fact the boss of them, and the most adult thing they can do in an extreme situation is to recognize that they need to consider the health and safety of other people for once in their selfish lives and just… fuckin’… not go to Applebee’s for a few more weeks. This damn virus is going to come back hard in the late Autumn/early Winter– just in time for the annual Flu season– because cranio-rectally inverted crybabies are so desperate to go back to their usual daily routine of screaming at service industry workers and refusing to tip food servers that they’re willing to risk everyone else’s safety to do it.
What about USA? What you no upset that peoples constitutional rights are being stepped on? But why does this honestly matter here? I am surprised they haven’t removed anything that’s not related to MLP in any real way. All coronavirus discussion is going to do is spark stupid political debate from many that are not even remotely old enough or educated enough to be discussing it.

Seriously. Are there any other countries where people are being this stupid, or are we just lucky?
Unfortunately, anyone who’d be inclined to slap some sense into these people is smart enough to stay inside.
Thanks for keeping the site sane! Too many other places are willing to put up with these conspiracy nutcases.
And if you want to share your tin-foil-hat conspiracies about how the Coronavirus doesn’t really exist and this is all just another “Sandy Hook” black-flag operation then please fuck off to some other site.
