When our lovable tiny equines stand on their hind legs (tag: bipedal), they swing the thighs back to align to the [arced] spine (which should technically be impossible), but then the hind hooves still have the trouble of how they are shaped and angled, should not allow support for long. Sunset Shimmer demonstrates this perfectly.
 

 
But it seems that when Sunset tried to transition to pony when meeting Starlight, upon trying to walk forward, her legs instead bent inward, meaning the bone structure would probably adjust somewhere in the hips once straightened upward, sometimes we see ponies stretch out their hips wide, so something in there is flexible. So to stand, ponies have to angle their hooves in such a way and technically create a balancing act swinging the upper body around.
 
Technically what this artist did is more anatomically correct regarding a real life equine rather than a fake, pastel pony.
