I didn’t see it so much as wanting to be normal, as fearing that his chaotic nature (and naturally much longer lifespan?) would just end up hurting his newfound friends in the end. Which is kind of similar to what we saw in “Discordant Harmony” – he only wanted to make that tea party normal because he thought that’s what Fluttershy would prefer.
 
Of course, his strong aversion to responsibility and structure finding expression in the dream scenes with Celestia Lumbergh is still hilarious.

There is a different image of Discord perceived by comic writers, different by McCarthy and Larson, different by Nick Confalone and Lady Writers and different by Josh and Dubuc. Everyone see him less or more mischivious. The only thing they agree on is that he respect Fluttershy.

The gist, if i remember correctly, is Discord having some deep-seated desire to be normal, happy, and generally agreeable like his acquired pony friends(which, in IDW continuity, included the crusaders), but weighed down by both a aversion to becoming too bored and controlled, and a genuine fear that his own nature would prevent him from being a better person.
 
Hence, this picture.
 
Knowing what I do now, I almost wish that was the kind of discord we had.
